Tambopata Tours Rainforest 4 Days / 3 Nights

Amazing Mammals in Search of Minerals

Due to the high rainfall across the Amazon Tambopata Tours Rainforest, this seemingly fertile region suffers from the shortage of an element abundant in desert-like ecosystems -sodium. Sodium is essential for everyday cell

functioning in all vertebrates. But it is very soluble and as such is washed out of the ecosystem very quickly. One of the places sodium can be found is in the dense clay deposited by the river systems. This clay has an added bonus, the

capacity to bind natural plant toxins. As such, salt-rich clay is sought out and consumed by almost all animals that

have a high percentage of vegetable material in their diets, from tiny bats and green agouchys (Myoprocta pratti), to the rainforest’s largest mammal (at up to 270 kg), the Brazilian tapir (Tapirus terrestris).

Itinerary Tour

Quick Itinerary Tambopata Tours Rainforest

DAY 1: PUERTO MALDONADO, TAMBOPATA TOURS RAINFOREST, CHUNCHO LODGE

We pick you up from the airport/coach terminal of Puerto Maldonado to take you first to our office where you can leave your things unnecessary for the trip Tambopata Tours Rainforest . There, you have also the last opportunity to buy some necessities such as batteries, waterproofs, etc.

Then, you get on our private vehicle to take you for an hour ride following a dirt road watching changeable nature along the way such as diverse forest types, traditional farms cultivating bananas and citruses, cattle farms, streams, etc. Then, we get to the Native Community of Infierno where the port of Puerto Nuevo is situated. We board our motorboat there to navigate for about 2 hours the Tambopata River with a direction to the Inotawa Lodge.

During the ride,

we are provided lunch consisting of vegetable rice wrapped in a bijao leaf (a leaf traditionally used in regional cuisine) along with fruits, biscuits and bottled water while we can admire flora along the river banks, for example, cañabravales, cecropias, ficus, as well as fauna such as birds. We may see weaving birds with their nests high up in the trees, herons, macaws, parrots or toucans. If we are lucky, we might spot mammals such as capybaras and tapirs or white caimans and turtles resting on the banks. Once in the Inotawa Lodge, which is located on the banks of the Tambopata River, in the beginning of the Tambopata National Reserve, we accommodate ourselves while our Tour Guide indicates us about the best ways on how to enjoy our stay.

In the afternoon, our Tour Guide takes us on a walk to explore fauna and flora near the lodge. So we can watch some birds, for instance, trogons, quails, guans (wild turkeys – Penelopinae) as well as trees and vines such as Shihuahuacos, Almendrillos, Ceibas. Then we are served dinner in the lodge.

Optional: A night walk in a company of our Tour Guide who shows us some nocturnal animals, for example, nocturnal monkeys, frogs, spiders or insect.

DAY 2: CHUNCHO LODGE, TAMBOPATA TOURS RAINFOREST, MACAW´S CLAY LICK OF LA TORRE

We wake up at 5 am to sail by boat to a nearby clay-lick called Collpa La Torre (collpa means clay-lick). Upon arrival, we find a good viewpoint (about 30 metres far away from the clay-lick) providing us a perfect spot to observe macaws, parrots, parakeets and maybe deer, capybaras, squirrels as well.

The Collpa La Torre is similar to other clay licks along the Tambopata River and it consists of a 4 metre high and 20 metre long embankment. Its clay contains minerals necessary for digestions of the above mentioned animals. This entire spectacle lasts until 9 am (approximately).

Afterwards, we observe neighbouring nature where we can spot tapirs, lowland pacas (Cuniculus paca), peccaries and other mammals. For lunch we return to the lodge to later head for fishing in the Tambopata River. Dinner is served in the lodge.

Optional: A night caiman observation in the river.

DAY 3: CHUNCHO LODGE, TAMBOPATA TOURS RAINFOREST, TRES CHIMBADAS LAKE

We board a rowing boat after breakfast sailing downstream for 15 minutes to later continue hiking for 40 minutes until we reach the typical oxbow lake of Amazon – Tres Chimbas Lake. Upon arrival, the Tour Guide shows us the best way on how to appreciate the lake and its typical inhabitants – a family of giant river otters, an endangered species. Except of them, we can also admire a variety of birds, for example, hoatzin, anhinga (or darter), herons, kingfishers as well as some reptiles and mammals.

Then, we are given a chance to try to fish the famous and dangerous piranha! In the afternoon, we explore around a bamboo forest (Guadua weberbaweri) near the lake as well as the native community of Infierno. In this special bamboo biosphere, we can see its typical inhabitants such as the rare Peruvian Recurvebill (Syndactyla ucayalae) or White-lined Antbird (Percnostola lophotes),

which are both threatened due to their natural habitat loss

, the Manu Antbird, Bamboo Antshrike, the Rufous-headed Woodpecker, the White-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher (Poecilotriccus albifacies), which is an endemic specie to humid bamboo thickets, the Flammulated Bamboo Tyrant (Hemitriccus flammulatus), or migratory birds – the Eastern Wood Pewee and the Yellow- green Vireo.

We get back to the lodge at dusk accompanied by our Tour Guide. So we have an opportunity to enjoy some night jungle noises, a storm as well as to see some of the northern constellations such as the Scorpion or the Southern Cross. We take a spotlight with us just in case, as we go across a territory of caimans waiting for their prey. Dinner and overnight in the lodge.

DAY 4: CHUNCHO LODGE, TAMBOPATA TOURS RAINFOREST, PUERTO MALDONADO

We board a motorboat early after breakfast to take us back to Puerto Maldonado navigating upstream the Tampopata River. There, we transfer you first to our office to collect your belongings and then either to the airport or the coach terminal to take your connection.

Biological Station Manu Park

Biological Station Manu Park

Biological Station Manu Park: A Journey Through One of the Most Biodiverse Places on Earth

Manu National Park is one of the most extraordinary protected areas in Peru and a true paradise for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and adventurous travelers. As one of the thirteen national parks in Peru, Manu stands out for its immense size, exceptional biodiversity, and cultural significance.

Located in the regions of Cusco and Madre de Dios, Manu National Park stretches across an astonishing range of ecosystems, descending from the Andean highlands at 4,000 meters above sea level to the Amazon rainforest floodplains at just 300 meters. This dramatic elevation gradient creates a mosaic of habitats unlike anywhere else in the world.

A Vast Protected Area With a Unique History

Manu National Park was officially established on May 29, 1973, originally covering 1,532,806 hectares of pristine wilderness. In 2002, the park expanded when the lower Manu Valley—formerly classified as a Reserved Zone—was fully incorporated. Today, the park protects an impressive 1,692,137 hectares of untouched nature.

What makes Manu truly unique within Peru’s National System of Protected Natural Areas (SINANPE) is that it is the only national park in the country that safeguards an entire watershed. From glacial streams in the Andes to the winding rivers of the Amazon Basin, the Manu River system remains largely undisturbed. tambopata macaw clay lick

An Unmatched Diversity of Landscapes and Wildlife –

Manu National Park preserves a complete sample of Andean–Amazonian ecosystems in southeastern Peru. Cloud forests, high-altitude grasslands, lowland rainforest, and riverine habitats all coexist within the park’s boundaries.

Thanks to this ecological variety, Manu is considered one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Scientists have recorded:

  • Over 1,000 species of birds, including macaws, harpy eagles, and Andean cock-of-the-rock
  • Hundreds of mammal species, such as jaguars, giant otters, tapirs, and several monkey species
  • Thousands of plant species, many of which are still being studied
  • A remarkable diversity of reptiles, amphibians, insects, and fish

For travelers interested in wildlife observation, photography, and conservation tourism, Manu National Park offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Indigenous Cultures and Living Heritage -Biological Station Manu Park:

Beyond its natural wonders, Manu National Park is also a place of deep cultural importance. The park is home to the Matsigenka people, who maintain traditional lifestyles closely connected to the forest. Manu Rainforest Peru

In addition, Manu protects territories of other Indigenous groups, such as the Mashco-Piro (also known as Nomole), who live in voluntary isolation. Their presence reinforces the park’s global importance, not only as a biodiversity hotspot but also as a refuge for ancestral cultures and human diversity.

International Recognition by UNESCO

Manu’s global value has been recognized by UNESCO on multiple occasions:

In 1977, Manu National Park and surrounding areas were designated a Biosphere Reserve, covering 1,881,200 hectares

In 1987, UNESCO further honored the park by naming it a World Heritage Site, acknowledging its outstanding natural value and exceptional ecological integrity

These designations place Manu among the most important protected areas on Earth.

Visiting Manu National Park: What Travelers Should Know – Biological Station Manu Park:

Visiting Manu National Park is a unique and carefully regulated experience designed to protect its fragile ecosystems and Indigenous communities. Access is typically possible through authorized tour operators, with routes departing from Cusco and entering either the cultural zone or buffer areas of the park.

Travelers can expect:

  • Remote jungle lodges and river expeditions
  • Guided wildlife observation and birdwatching
  • Immersive experiences in untouched rainforest
  • A strong focus on sustainability and conservation

Due to its remoteness, a visit to Manu is ideal for travelers seeking authentic Amazon adventures, far from mass tourism.

Why Manu National Park Should Be on Your Travel Bucket List  – Biological Station Manu Park:

Manu National Park is not just a destination—it is a living laboratory of nature, culture, and conservation. From snow-capped Andean peaks to the heart of the Amazon rainforest, it offers one of the most complete and awe-inspiring journeys in South America. SANDOVAL LAKE LODGE

Whether you are passionate about wildlife, Indigenous cultures, or pristine landscapes, Manu National Park in Peru represents the ultimate connection between nature and humanity.
