Excursions Day 1: Lima/Cusco to Puerto Maldonado – Embarking on the Amazon Explorer Adventure
Your journey into the heart of the Amazon Explorer begins today as you take a flight from Lima or Cusco to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, I will be waiting at the airport or land terminal to greet you. Our first destination is the main office, where you can register and possibly leave heavy backpacks. Alternatively, you can choose to take them with you to the Lodge.
From the office, we will proceed to the bustling Tambopata main port. This marks the start of an exciting chapter in your adventure as we board an outboard boat, which will carry us upstream along the Tambopata River toward our lodge.
During this river journey, keep an eye out for the fascinating array of species that frequent the riverbanks. The journey includes a box-lunch to keep you energized for the day’s exploration. After arriving at the lodge, you will receive a refreshing drink and an introduction to our dedicated staff. We will assign your private rooms, providing a comfortable sanctuary in the heart of the jungle.
As the afternoon sun begins to wane, it’s time to embark on a walk through the lush “terra firme” tropical forest.
This unique environment is dominated by grand Brazil nut trees, offering a haven for an array of wildlife. Stay attuned to your senses as we venture along the trails, encountering mammals such as tamarinds, capuchin monkeys, agoutis, and more. The forest comes alive with vibrant blue morpho butterflies, trogons, toucans, and a symphony of other bird species.

Our adventure begins by immersing ourselves in the depths of the virgin jungle, embarking on a hike along lesser-known trails that promise hidden treasures. Accompanied by your knowledgeable guide, you will once again board the motorized canoe. This short journey leads to the next trailhead, marking the start of a captivating morning of discovery both on foot and by canoe.
Venturing onto the trail, you will sense the anticipation in the air as the wonders of Amazonia beckon. The canoe ride across Condemned Lake unveils a realm teeming with avian life and vibrant aquatic wonders. Your senses will come alive as you bear witness to the family of giant river otters that grace the lake’s environs. Turtles, small alligators, and an array of fishing birds dot the landscape. Madre de Dios, Peru is a large department (or state) in the wild, southeastern part of the country. Its name means “Mother of God” and is a common Spanish synonym for “the Virgin Mary”. The rather generic name given to the
Madre de Dios department in Amazon Tambopata is a reflection of how little was known about the region during the Spanish colonial era. Whereas some departments were assigned the same name used by the Incans, neither Incan people nor Spanish colonists settled in the southeastern amazon lowlands so the department was simply named in
honor of one of the most revered figures in Roman Catholicism (the principle religion of the Spanish colonists). Explorer Tambopata Reserve in a sense, this name befit a wild, untamed wilderness of dense rainforests explore,
