3-Day Amazon Trip Adventure: Discover Lake Sandoval
Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado and Journey to Lake Sandoval .
Welcome to the Amazon. Your adventure begins upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, where we’ll greet you at the airport or bus terminal. After a quick registration with Amazonia Peru Expeditions at our office, you can securely store your larger luggage and pack a smaller bag with essentials for your 3-day journey into the heart of the Amazon.
Next, we’ll head to the port and board a boat for an exciting ride along the Abajo River of Alto Madre de Dios. Keep your eyes peeled for diverse wildlife, including colorful birds, turtles, and sunbathing alligators.
Our journey takes us to the Lake Sandoval Reserve checkpoint.
Here, you’ll register before embarking on a scenic 3 km (1.2 miles) trek through lush rainforest, spotting various species along the way. This 1-hour 20-minute walk leads us to a small port where we’ll board a rowing canoe and glide through a winding canyon to our lodge for the next two nights.
After settling into your private room, enjoy a delicious lunch before exploring the Lake Sandoval Reserve in the afternoon. Navigate the waters by canoe, on the lookout for the elusive Giant River Otter, Black Caimans, and a vibrant array of exotic birds, including the prehistoric Shansho, herons, cormorants, and kingfishers.
As night falls, join us for an unforgettable nocturnal adventure on the lake. Paddle quietly through the darkness to spot caimans and other nighttime creatures, guided by our knowledgeable staff who will share fascinating insights about these animals. Return to the lodge for a well-deserved rest.
Day 2: Discovering Macaw Palm Trees and Jungle Treasures
Awaken to the symphony of rainforest birds and enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel your day. We’ll set out to the unique Collpa de Palmeras, where palm trees thrive in the water, creating a vibrant habitat for macaws, parakeets, and parrots. Watch as these colorful birds feast on the nutritious fruits and mineral-rich rinds of the palms.
After this captivating morning, return to the lodge for lunch, then embark on an afternoon exploration of the dense primary jungle. Wander through untouched forest paths, encountering rare species like monkeys, sloths, anteaters, and capybaras, along with intriguing insects and plants such as ayahuasca and chacruna. Day 3: Palm Clay Licks and Departure
On our final day, wake up early to visit the fascinating palm clay licks, where macaws gather to consume mineral-rich clay, essential for their digestion and overall health. After this memorable experience, return to the lodge for a final breakfast, allowing time for some last photographs of the stunning lake.
We’ll then pack up and take a canoe ride back to the entry point, where a boat will transport us back to Puerto Maldonado. Collect your luggage from our office, and we’ll ensure your smooth transfer to the airport or bus terminal for your onward journey.
