TRAVEL IN PERU AMAZON – SANDOVAL LAKE LODGE –

Sandoval Lake operates in regions where standards of accommodation, transport and services might not be normally

you would expect. However we strive, with all the diligence and ability to provide the best services for our tourists.

Travelling the Peru requires flexibility, patience, generosity of spirit, good humor and understanding the changes

that can be worn without notice due to circumstances beyond our control (Force Majeure – see below).

When booking any of our tours you agree to Sandoval Lake Travel Agency make the necessary changes without liability.

Any situation or event that Sandoval Lake Travel Agency can not, even with all due care, foresee or avoid. Events such as war or threat, riot, civil disturbance, terrorist activity, labor disputes, diseases, disasters or adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events outside our control. In this case, Sandoval Lake Travel Agency is not responsible and reserves the right to modify, postpone or even cancel the trip (this is the last option, of course)

Thank you for choosing Sandoval Lake – Travel and Tourism Agency. Please read the following Terms and

Conditions carefully before making a booking.

These Terms and Conditions govern your relationship with www.sandovallake.com. By booking a trip through our

website, by phone, email, or fax, you agree to these terms, which include our cancellation policies and liability

limitations. These terms also determine applicable laws and the forum for resolving disputes.

General Booking Terms

To make a reservation, you must carefully read and understand these Terms and Conditions. By booking with

Sandoval Lake, you confirm that you, and everyone named in your reservation (including minors and individuals

with disabilities), accept and understand these terms.

A booking is considered confirmed only after we send you a receipt or email confirmation. This confirmation marks

the start of a contractual agreement between you and Sandoval Lake.

Before your booking is confirmed, we reserve the right to adjust tour prices. We also reserve the right to decline

bookings at our discretion. All reservations must be made under the name of the “Customer.”

Travel Insurance – Terms and Conditions

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers:

Accidents
Medical expenses
Emergency repatriation (including air ambulance)
Trip cancellation
Lost or stolen luggage

Please send a copy or policy number of your insurance to our office.

Travel Risks – Terms and Conditions

When you book adventure trips to destinations such as:

you voluntarily accept the inherent risks of such experiences. Sandoval Lake Travel Agency is not liable for injuries, delays, or other issues arising from these risks.

Personal Data – Terms and Conditions

Please ensure your passport is valid throughout your trip. Inform us if you renew or change your passport after

booking, especially for trips including the Inca Trail, as Peruvian authorities are strict with ID at checkpoints (e.g., KM 82).

If you use an ISIC card, it must be valid on the tour’s start date.
Making a Reservation – Terms and Conditions
To secure your booking, you must pay a 50% non-refundable deposit per person. The remaining balance is due upon arrival in Lima, Cusco, or Puerto Maldonado.
Clients are responsible for covering any transaction fees, which are not included in the package price.
Payment Options:

Once our team confirms your reservation, you will receive secure details to deposit the amount into our bank account.

Online Payments via ITS
Fill out your passenger information and send the total payment online to Sandoval Lake.

The balance must be paid in cash or via internet banking upon arrival in Lima, Cusco, or Puerto Maldonado.
Final Balance Payment – Terms and Conditions
You must pay the final balance at least 48 hours before the trip at our offices (cash only in Peruvian soles).
If payment is not made in time and you do not inform us of a delayed arrival, we reserve the right to cancel your trip.
We apply a daily exchange rate (e.g., 1 USD = 3.10 soles, subject to market variations). If the USD exchange rate drops significantly, we may allow up to a 10-point variation. However, we do not accept rates below 3.00 soles per USD, to maintain service quality and ensure fair wages for our local staff.

We also choose not to participate in attractions involving captive or artificially habituated wildlife, staged cultural encounters, or activities that raise significant ethical, safety, or legal concerns.

We know these experiences are widely advertised, particularly in tours sold locally. They may be appropriate for some travelers, but they are not what we offer.

Our goal is simple: to give you a genuine Amazon wildlife experience, combined with comfortable transportation, excellent lodging, and access to some of the most biodiverse habitats in the Tambopata region.

In the Amazon, it is not only where you go—it is who you go with.

Questions About Tours Amazon & What to Bring to the Amazon

For all Real Nature Tours itineraries, you will repack before traveling into the rainforest and take only what you actually need. Your larger luggage can be stored securely at our city office. MANU TOURS

Because luggage must be carried by hand between transportation points, boats, and guest rooms, backpacks and soft duffel bags are much more practical than wheeled suitcases.

Please note that porter service is not provided, so travelers should be prepared to carry their own belongings.

Recommended Amazon Packing List

Mosquito repellent: We recommend a repellent containing approximately 15% DEET. Natural repellents are generally less reliable in the rainforest.
Headlamp or flashlight: Especially useful during night walks and around the lodge after dark. A headlamp keeps your hands free.
Plastic sandals or flip-flops: Convenient for boat rides and relaxing at the lodge. Shoes are not worn inside the lodge.
Hat or cap with a chin strap: Strong winds on the river can quickly carry away unsecured hats.
Lightweight rain poncho: A simple plastic poncho is often more practical in tropical downpours than a conventional rain jacket.
Long socks: Particularly useful when wearing the rubber boots provided during the rainy season.
Reusable water bottle: We provide filtered and treated drinking water for refills, helping reduce single-use plastic.
Light windbreaker: River journeys can feel surprisingly cool because of wind and high humidity.
Lightweight clothing: Bring both shorts and long clothing. Shorts are comfortable around the lodge, while long sleeves and lightweight trousers are preferable for hiking and boat excursions.

We strongly recommend leaving unnecessary luggage at our city headquarters.

Rolling suitcases are difficult to manage on boats, forest trails, and uneven ground. We provide free storage for excess luggage at our office, and duffel bags can be borrowed there if you need to repack before entering the rainforest.

Sandoval lake is so popular because it combines exceptional Amazon wildlife with relatively easy access.

Abundant wildlife: The lake is especially famous for giant river otters, as well as black caimans, monkeys, capybaras, tapirs, macaws, parrots, and many other birds.

Beautiful scenery: It’s a large oxbow lake, surrounded by aguaje palm forests and other Amazonian vegetation. The calm water creates striking reflections of the forest and sky.
Easy to reach: From Puerto Maldonado, the trip to the Sandoval sector takes roughly 30 minutes by river, followed by a forest walk to the lake.
Great for wildlife watching: Visitors can explore by boat, walk through the forest, birdwatch, and use an observation tower overlooking the lake.
Protected ecosystem: Sandoval lies within the Tambopata National Reserve, where its forests and wildlife are protected. SERNANP describes it as one of the principal tourist destinations in the Peruvian Amazon and the reserve’s most visited destination.

In short: Sandoval Lake is popular because you can get a very concentrated “Amazon rainforest experience”—beautiful scenery and a high chance of seeing iconic wildlife—without needing a long, difficult expedition.
If you’re considering visiting, early morning is particularly good for wildlife, especially the giant river otters

one of the best-known Amazon destinations near Puerto Maldonado, and for good reason. However, it is important to understand that not all parts of the Amazon around Puerto Maldonado offer the same wildlife experience.

Many tours operate close to the city along the Madre de Dios River. Areas that have experienced greater human activity, agriculture, and development can have lower wildlife densities than remote, protected rainforest.

When wildlife encounters are less predictable, some itineraries compensate by emphasizing recreational activities.

Real Nature Tours operates along the Tambopata River, giving travelers access to remote rainforest habitats, pristine oxbow lakes, and areas known for exceptional biodiversity.

This environment can provide opportunities to see wildlife such as capybaras, monkeys, caimans, macaws, giant river otters, anacondas, and many species of rainforest birds.

Sandoval Lake is an important destination, but it is not the only place to look for wildlife in the Tambopata region. We believe the quality of the ecosystem and the expertise of your guides are just as important as the name of the destination.

Questions About Tours Amazon – When Is the Best Time to Visit the Amazon?

There is no single “perfect” month to visit the Amazon.

The Tambopata rainforest has broadly defined rainy and drier periods, but conditions can change from day to day. Rain does not necessarily mean that excursions are canceled or that wildlife disappears.

In fact, rain is part of what makes the rainforest so extraordinary.

Each season has its own advantages, and wildlife can be observed throughout the year. Rather than choosing a trip solely according to a particular month, we recommend considering the type of experience you want and being prepared for changing tropical conditions.

Which Season Is Best for Seeing Animals?

Amazon wildlife is present throughout the year.

Because the rainforest does not experience the extreme seasonal temperature changes found in many temperate regions, animals do not simply disappear during one season. Some species and behaviors may be easier to observe under particular weather or habitat conditions, but there is no single season in which the Amazon suddenly becomes “empty” of wildlife.

Wildlife viewing is possible year-round.

The bigger factor is often the habitat you visit, the time of day, and the skill of your guide.

Questions About Tours Amazon – How Easy Is It to See Wildlife in Tambopata?

Wild animals are never guaranteed. Anyone promising otherwise is setting unrealistic expectations.

However, some Amazon habitats consistently produce better wildlife encounters than others.

Oxbow lakes are among the most productive wildlife environments in Tambopata. Lakes such as Condenado and Sachavacayoc can attract concentrations of wildlife, including several species of monkeys, caimans, aquatic birds, and other rainforest animals.

There are also opportunities to search for species such as giant river otters and anacondas, although sightings always depend on natural conditions.

Groups of monkeys regularly move through the surrounding forest, and it is possible to encounter several species in a single observation period.

The Amazon can feel surprisingly quiet when explored in low-density habitats. In a high-biodiversity ecosystem, however, the same forest can suddenly become extraordinarily active.

The difference is often not the Amazon itself, but knowing where, when, and how to look.

Is Malaria a Risk in Tambopata?

Travelers often ask about malaria before visiting the Peruvian Amazon.

Our operational area has not experienced a reported case of malaria in more than 25 years, and we are not currently aware of active cases in the immediate area in which our tours operate.

However, travel-health recommendations can change, and malaria risk should be evaluated according to your complete itinerary, not just your lodge location.

The most practical protection against mosquitoes is to minimize bites. We recommend using an effective insect repellent, wearing appropriate clothing, and following current advice from your doctor or official travel-health authority.

Do not make decisions about malaria prophylaxis based solely on information from a tour operator. If you are concerned about malaria medication, consult a qualified travel-health professional before your trip.

Do I Need a Yellow Fever Vaccine for Tambopata?

Yellow fever requirements depend on your nationality, previous travel, and future destinations.

Peruvian entry requirements and international transit rules can change, so travelers should check the current requirements that apply to their specific itinerary before departure.

Even when a vaccine is not mandatory for entry, travelers may still wish to discuss yellow fever vaccination with a qualified travel-health professional.

Where Is the Best Place to See Monkeys in Tambopata?

If your priority is seeing wild monkeys, the best opportunities are generally found in productive rainforest habitats rather than artificial wildlife attractions.

Oxbow lakes such as Condenado, Tres Chimbadas, and Sachavacayoc are particularly interesting locations. Several native monkey species live freely in these ecosystems and can sometimes be observed from boats, trails, or forest observation areas.

What About Monkey Island?

We do not visit Monkey Island.

Our reason is straightforward: we prefer observing animals that are genuinely wild rather than visiting attractions where captive or semi-habituated monkeys are presented to tourists.

Animals that depend on tourist handouts can develop unnatural feeding behaviors and may become defensive around people. For travelers specifically seeking authentic Amazon wildlife, we believe observing monkeys in their natural habitat is a much more meaningful experience.

We would rather spend our time searching for wild monkeys in the rainforest than visiting an attraction created around human-animal interaction.

Do Your Tours Include Kayaking, Zip-Lining, or Canopy Walks?

No.

Our itineraries are centered on wildlife observation, natural history, rainforest exploration, and ecological interpretation.

Kayaking, zip-lines, canopy walks, and similar recreational activities can be enjoyable, but they are not the reason we operate tours in the Tambopata rainforest.

We believe that travelers who choose a dedicated wildlife tour should spend their limited time doing what they came to the Amazon to experience: looking for animals, learning about the forest, and exploring natural habitats.

Where applicable, travelers should also verify that adventure activities operated by third parties meet appropriate safety and regulatory standards.

What Happens If My Flight Is Delayed?

We continuously monitor incoming flights.

If your arrival is delayed, our team can adjust the timing of your transfers and coordinate your connection to the river accordingly. You do not need to worry about arranging everything yourself while you are still traveling.

If your flight changes, we adapt the logistics around you.

How Much Luggage Can I Bring?

We recommend traveling into the rainforest with only the essentials.

A backpack or soft duffel bag is ideal. Rolling suitcases are inconvenient when loading boats, walking on forest trails, and moving between rooms.

Porter service is not available, so travelers should be comfortable handling their own luggage.

For everything you do not need at the lodge:

Excess luggage can be stored free of charge at our city headquarters.
Duffel bags may be available to borrow at our office if you need to repack.
We recommend keeping your rainforest luggage as light and manageable as possible.

What Are the Chances of Seeing an Anaconda or Jaguar?

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but some locations and habitats offer considerably better opportunities than others.

Anaconda Sightings

Condenado Lake 2, deep within the Tambopata National Reserve, is one of our preferred locations for searching for anacondas.

Based on our historical observations, sightings have averaged approximately 20% at this location. That makes it an excellent place to search, but it is important to understand that a percentage is not a promise. Anacondas remain wild animals and conditions change.

Jaguar Sightings

Jaguar encounters are considerably rarer.

The best opportunities in our area tend to occur along the Tambopata River, particularly during river transportation when guides are actively scanning the riverbanks.

Our current estimated sighting probability is around 5%.

Older marketing material sometimes quotes much higher jaguar sighting rates for this area. Those figures reflected different ecological conditions and should not be used to set current expectations. Historically, jaguar sightings were more frequent before 2018, when large groups of white-lipped peccaries—an important prey species—moved away from the immediate river corridor.

We prefer to provide realistic wildlife expectations rather than outdated statistics designed to sell tours.

Can I Add Extra Excursions to My Tour?

Our standard schedules are carefully structured around the periods when wildlife is generally most active.

Additional excursions may be possible, but they are not automatically included and depend on several factors.
Guide working hours

We respect working-hour regulations and mandatory rest periods for our guides. A guide cannot simply extend a working day indefinitely because a guest requests an additional excursion.
Additional costs

Custom or off-schedule excursions may require:

Guide overtime or an additional specialized guide
Additional park or reserve entrance fees
Additional boat or ground transportation
Availability of suitable guides and transportation
Favorable local conditions

If you are interested in a customized itinerary, we recommend discussing it with us before your trip.

Can I Arrive Early or Leave Later Than the Group?

Yes, you can arrange flights outside the main group schedule, but our shared transportation follows a fixed daily timetable.

The principal group arrival from Cusco is around 12:45 PM, with river departures generally scheduled between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM.

These times are designed not only for logistical efficiency but also to coincide with productive wildlife-viewing periods along the river.

If you arrive earlier or depart later than the main group, our team can assist you in town while you wait for the scheduled transfer. However, private or unscheduled boat transportation is not automatically included.

Questions About Tours Amazon – Does the Lodge Have Air Conditioning?

No. Our lodge does not use conventional air conditioning.

The lodge is located deep inside primary rainforest, far from the municipal electrical grid. We operate using solar power, allowing us to minimize generator use, noise, and environmental impact.

Air-conditioning systems require substantial amounts of electricity, particularly in a hot and humid rainforest

environment. Providing conventional AC throughout the property would require a much larger energy infrastructure

and would conflict with our approach to operating responsibly in a remote rainforest setting.

Instead, guest rooms and common areas are equipped with energy-efficient ceiling fans operating around the clock.

The result is a quieter and more natural lodge experience while maintaining airflow and comfort.

For us, responsible Amazon tourism means accepting some of the realities of being in the rainforest rather than trying to recreate the conditions of a city hotel.
