From this vantage point, we’ll watch for mixed flocks of vibrant tanagers and other exotic species as they move through the treetops, immersing you in the rich diversity of the rainforest canopy .Here we will wait for a canopy mixed flock to appear. The mixed flocks are mostly all about tanagers: Paradise Tanager, Green-and-gold Tanager, Flame-crested Tanager, Turqoise Tanager, Opal- rumped Tanager and others. The tower also offers good opportunity for Cream- colored Woodpecker, Gilded Barbet, Plum-throated Cotinga and Striolated Puffbird. Macaws and toucans are seen flying against the horizon, including Chestnut-eared, Lettered, Curl-crested, and Brown-mandibled Aracaries. We will see lonely raptors riding the thermals. and this is your best chance for hawk-eagles and even Harpy Eagle! After lunch we will bird along the trail for Fiery-capped Manakin, Round-tailed Manakin, Pale-winged Trumpeter and Pavonine Quetzal. Overnight at Posada Amazonas.

Day 6: Morning Hike to the Majestic Ceiba Tree

Enjoy an early breakfast before setting out to explore the nearby trail system. Our morning trek will take us to the towering Ceiba (Kapok) Tree, where you’ll have the chance to spot an array of incredible bird species and immerse yourself in the vibrant life of the surrounding rainforest  area for great birds species such as Ash-Throated Gnateater, Ringed Antpipit, Golden-Crowned Spadebill, White-Bellied Tody-Tyrant, Elegant Woodcreeper, Cinnamon-Throated Woodcreeper, Buff-Throated Woodcreeper, Laughing Falcon, Slaty-Backed Forest-Falcon, Double-Toothed Kite, etc. Other wildlife also is very rich in the area and so we will look out for the herds of peccary such as White-Lipped Peccar which travel in large groups, and their smaller relative the Collared Peccary, as well as Tayra, Red-Brocket Deer and various species of monkeys. Afternoon boat trip to Refugio Amazonas. Overnight Refugio Amazonas .

Day 7-9: Adventure Awaits on the Tambopata River .

Join us as we explore the Tambopata River, where we’ll witness the spectacular Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick—the largest of its kind Unlike the now-defunct Colorado lick, Chuncho draws hundreds of parrots and macaws from up to 15 different species daily. Prepare to be amazed as we spot ten to twelve vibrant parrot species in their natural, colorful glory . We can expect to see ten to twelve of the following members of the parrot family:Red-and-green, Blue and Yellow, Scarlet, Red-bellied, Chestnut-fronted and Blue-headed Macaws; Mealy and Yellow-crowned Amazons; Blue-headed, Orange-cheeked and White-bellied Parrots; Dusky-headed, White-eyed, Cobalt-winged and Tui Parakeets and Dusky-billed Parrotlets. Here we will also explore the terra firme rainforest along a 4 mile Castana Trail, and the trail that goes to the old oxbow Lake, passing through floodplain forest with ponds and streams forming during the rainy season. The terra firme forest trails on the other hand are tall and rarely or never floods. Both of these trails represent the most specious habitats for birds. Too many possibilities to list, but this is habitat for Starred Wood Quail, Pale-winged Trumpeter, several Trogons, Foliage-gleaners, Black-tailed Leaftosser, many Woodcreepers, Antbirds, Flycatchers, Manakins, and much more. Mixed species flocks are especially diverse with understory flocks led by Dusky-throated Antshrike and Red-crowned Ant-Tanagers. They often contain 30-40 species (or more!) including: Plain winged Antshrike, Bluish Slate Antshrike, White eyed Antwren, Plain breasted Antwren, Thrush-like Antpitta, White-winged Shrike-Tanager, Amazonian Barred Woodcreeper, and Spix’s Woodcreeper. The flood plain trail to the old oxbow lake crosses some permanently flooded old ponds inhabited by Rufescent Tiger-heron, Pygmy and Green-and-rufous Kingfishers, and Sunbittern. After long hikes we can continue to bird within the confines to the lodge. Species possible in the lodge clearing include: some canopy flocks, Squirrel Cuckoo, Masked Crimson Tanager, Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper, Speckled Chachalaca and Yellow-tufted Woodpecker. We will bird the transitional forests by the river side. These were bamboo forests until they flowered and died out a few years back. Now they are akin to riparian forests but will eventually grow into terra firme as they are not affected by yearly floods. Here we will spot Buff-throated Saltator, Grayish Saltator, Crested and Russet-backed Oropendolas, Piratic Flycatatcher, Large-Headed Flatbill, Fiery-Capped Manakin, Red-Billed Scythebill, and others. While we are birding these spots we will have extraordinary views of the Tambopata river making its way down from the highlands. Overnight: at Refugio Amazonas.
