Overview
Day 1: Birdwatching Sandoval Lake Peru – Journey to the Heart of the Amazon .
Fly from Lima to Puerto Maldonado and be greeted by our team. Transfer to the River madre de Dios dock and board a motorized canoe for a 50-minute ride to the Madre de Dios River confluence. From there, walk 3 km through the rainforest, spotting monkeys, birds, and butterflies. Paddle across Sandoval Lake to the lodge, keeping an eye out for otters, caimans, and other wildlife. Overnight at Sandoval Lake Lodge. (Lunch and dinner included) .

Day 2: Birdwatching Lake Peru- Exploring Bamboo and Floodplain Forests .
Dive into the Amazon’s bamboo and floodplain forests. Search for rare species like the Red-billed Scythebill, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, and Flammulated Bamboo-tyrant. Explore the terra firme forest and see the Brazil Nut tree in its natural habitat. After dinner, embark on a night walk to spot Tawny-Bellied Screech-Owl and Spectacled Owl. (All meals included)
Day 3: Amazon Rainforest Adventures
Immerse yourself in diverse rainforest landscapes. Wander through floodplain and terra firme forests, marveling at Brazil Nut and Kapok trees. Search for Giant River Otters and spot wildlife from monkeys to colorful insects. In the evening, paddle Sandoval Lake for a chance to see the elusive Black Caiman. Enjoy an all-inclusive experience with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (All meals included)
Day 4: Departure from Puerto Maldonado
Return to Puerto Maldonado, taking in your final views of the Amazon. Transfer to the hotel or airport, concluding your memorable journey. (Breakfast included)
ITINERARY
Birdwatching Sandoval Lake Peru 4 days
Day 1: Journey to the Heart of the Amazon
Start your day with a morning flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, where your Amazon adventure truly begins.
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, our team will greet you and drive you through the city to the Tambopata River boat dock. Board a motorized canoe for a 50-minute journey to the confluence with the Madre de Dios River, the source of the Amazon.
From there, transfer to a trailhead and embark on a 3-km walk through the rainforest, spotting monkeys, birds, and butterflies Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for incredible wildlife sightings, making this trek a thrilling introduction to the wonders of the Amazon.
Species such as Black-Faced Cotinga, leks of Band-Tailed Manakin, and also found here is a very rare species of macaw in the Mauritia palms called Red-Shouldered Macaw. If lucky we may also see Long-Billed Woodcreeper, the always amazing Point-Tailed Palmcreeper, and Agami Heron. Sandoval Lake Lodge is a great place with different forest habitats including flood plain forest and terra firme. This combination makes for an excellent area for wildlife, and along with the lake, good place to see Otters, Monkeys, Caimans and other mammals. On arrival to the lake we will paddle across it to get the Lodge. Numerous specie can be seen on the way like egrets, Capped Heron, Cocoi Heron, Large and Yellow-billed Tern, Black Skimmer, Horned Screamer, Gray-Cowled wood-Rail, Sunbittern, Wattled Jacana, Greater Ani, the spectacular Hoatzin, and Blue-throated Piping Guan, Later in a catamaran we’ll search for the resident family of Giant River Otters (seen by 90% of our lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as Black Caiman, Squirrel Monkey, Red Howler Monkey, Brown Capuchin Monkey, etc. If we lucky in the evening the very interesting Bicolored-Spined Porcupine, and a Southern Tamandua may show themselves.The lakeside resident Hoatzin, and the less frequent Horned Screamer are regular sightings. Macaws, Toucans and raptors can all be seen. Overnight at Sandoval Lake Lodge.
Day 2:Exploring Bamboo and Floodplain Forests
Dive deep into the heart of the Amazon as we spend the next two days exploring the unique bamboo and floodplain forests. We’ll search for rare and fascinating species, like the Red-billed Scythebill, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Rufous-breasted Piculet, Brown-rumped Foliage Gleaner, Large- headed Flatbill, Dusky- tailed Flatbill, Dusky-cheeked Foliage-gleaner, Flammulated Bamboo-tyrant, Dot- winged and Ornate Antwren, White-lined Antbird, Rufous capped Nunlet, Pheasant Cuckoo and Striped Cuckoo. One day in the afternoon we’ll focus on the terra firme forest for an opportunity to see the Brazil Nut tree in its natural habitat.
Razor-billed Curassow, Blue-throated Piping Guan, Spix’s Guan, Great Tinamou, Lemon-Throated Barbet, Curl-Crested Aracari, Semicollared Puffbird, Collared Puffbird, Blue-Crowned Trogon, Amazonian or Blue-Crowned Motmot, Scale-Breasted Woodpecker, Ringed Woodpecker, Red-Necked Woodpecker, Plain-Brown Woodcreeper, are all strong possibilities. After dinner we will provide the opportunity to look for Tawny-Bellied Screech-Owl, spectacled Owl, and others nocturnal species.
Day 3: Explore the Amazon: A Journey Through Stunning Rainforest Landscapes
Immerse yourself in the vibrant Amazon rainforest as we explore its diverse habitats. Wander through lush floodplain and terra firme forests, encountering towering Brazil Nut and Kapok trees—the giants of the jungle. Our excursions will maximize wildlife sightings, including the elusive Giant River Otters.
In the evenings, glide across Sandoval Lake by canoe to search for the rare Black Caiman, similar to the North American Alligator. The lake and its surroundings offer fantastic opportunities to spot monkeys and other fascinating wildlife, from colorful insects to intriguing reptiles.
Enjoy an all-inclusive experience with breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided as we delve into the wonders of the Amazon.
Day 4: Departure from Puerto Maldonado
As we head back to Puerto Maldonado, savor your final moments in the Amazon. Absorb the lingering sights, sounds, and lush aroma of the rainforest one last time. We’ll drop you off at the hotel or airport, marking the end of an unforgettable journey. (Breakfast included)
