Day 1: Arrival and Introduction to Peru Birding Tours Tambopata .
Welcome to Peru Birding Tours. After arriving in Puerto Maldonado, we’ll transfer you to our office and then embark on a scenic drive to the Tambopata River. Along the way, we’ll make stops to observe a variety of bird species, such as the Southern Crested Caracara, Red-breasted Blackbird, and the rare South-American Snipe. After an exciting day of birdwatching, we’ll transfer you to our lodge for a warm welcome and a brief orientation before settling into your room.
Day 2: Early Morning Amazon Birding
Begin the day with an early breakfast and an enriching walk through the Amazon. The forest canopy offers numerous opportunities to spot mixed bird flocks, including tanagers, macaws, and toucans. This is a prime chance to see hawk-eagles and even the elusive harpy eagle. After lunch, we’ll explore the river by boat to observe species like the King Vulture and Ringed Kingfisher. As night falls, we’ll search for owls, potoos, and other nocturnal creatures. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 3: Peru Birding Tours Tambopata – Macaw and Parrot Clay Lick Experience .
Rise early to witness a breathtaking spectacle at the clay lick, where vibrant macaws, parrots, and parakeets gather to ingest clay. Species such as the Mealy Amazon and Scarlet Macaw are commonly seen in large groups. Breakfast will be served on-site to ensure ample time to enjoy this birding paradise.
In the afternoon, we’ll explore the Toucan Trail, looking for species like the Pavonine Quetzal and Round-tailed Manakin.
Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 4: Bamboo Trail and Sandoval Lake .
An early start will take us to the Bamboo Trail, home to bamboo specialists like the White-cheeked Tody Tyrant and Red-billed Scythebill. After breakfast, we’ll transfer to the stunning Sandoval Lake.
The journey includes a boat ride and a 3-kilometer jungle walk, where we may spot motmots, trogons, and the unique horned screamer. At Sandoval Lake, we’ll look for species such as the Hoatzin, Snail Kite, and various kingfishers.
Dinner and overnight at Sandoval Lodge.
Day 5: Departure from Sandoval Lake .
After breakfast, we’ll canoe across Sandoval Lake, followed by a 3-kilometer walk back to our motorized boat. We’ll then transfer you to Puerto Maldonado, with a stop at our office before heading to the airport. Depending on flight schedules, an early departure may be necessary.

Days 1 : Arrival and Introduction to Peru Birding Tours Tambopata .
Join us at Peru Birding Tours, where our expert birding guides, with unmatched skills in identifying hundreds of bird species by sight and sound, will lead you through unforgettable birding expeditions. Our programs are meticulously designed to offer the ultimate birding experience.
Seamless Transfers and Start of Expedition
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado from Lima or Cusco, we will meet you at the airport and take you on a short 10-minute drive to our office. After packing your essential adventure gear, we will set off on a scenic drive to the Tambopata River. Along the way, we will stop frequently to observe savannah species in the open landscapes, giving you a glimpse of the incredible wildlife that awaits you.
Southern Crested Caracara, White-tailed Kite, Black-faced Tanager, Red-breasted Blackbird, White-browed Blackbird, Scaled Pigeon, Point-tailed Palm-creeper, Sulphury Flycatcher Gray-lined Hawk White-tailed Hawk and the rare South-American Snipe. After the pave road will get into a dirt road for 18 kilometers where we can see Purus Jacamar, White browed Blackbird, Pearl Kite, and Scaled Pigeon, this will be the first 48 kilometers, the next 18 kilometers will have the opportunity for observing, bat falcon, sunbitern , white-throated toucan, yellow ridge toucan, red bellied macaw, crimson crested woodpecker, black fronted nunbird and much more.
Transfer to our lodge, it will take no more than 15 minutes, upon arrival you will be welcoming by our staff and after a small information about our lodge, you will be taken to your room.
2 Days : Early Morning Amazon Birding Experience
Start your day with an early breakfast before embarking on a long walk through the Amazon. This journey offers a unique perspective, with the forest canopy providing numerous opportunities to spot mixed bird flocks, adding a whole new dimension to your birding adventure .
The mixed flock is mostly all about tanagers: Paradise Tanager, Green-and-gold Tanager, Flame-crested Tanager, Turqoise Tanager, Opal- rumped Tanager and others. The walk will go by a upland forest too wich also offers good opportunity for Cream- colored Woodpecker, Gilded Barbet, Plum-throated Cotinga and Striolated Puffbird. Macaws and toucans are seen flying against the horizon, including the Chestnut-eared, Lettered, Emerald, Curl-crested, and Brown-mandibled Aracaries. We will see lonely raptors riding the thermals. This is your best chance for hawk-eagles and even harpy eagle.
Back for lunch and checklist.
In the afternoon will go to visit the river on our boat to look for Pied Lapwing, Collared Plover, King Vulture, Bat Falcon, Olive and Russet-backed Oropendolas and Ringed Kingfisher and Amazon Kingfisher.
In the night will go again to look for owl such as, screech owls, crested owls, to spot-light Pauraque, Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl, Great Potoo, Long tailed Potoo, Ocellated Poorwill and if we are lucky a Mottled Owl or Crested Owl. There is also the possibility of taking macro shoots of American Bullfrogs, Horned Frog, tree frogs and other creatures of the night and much more.

Day 3 ; Spectacular Macaw and Parrot Clay Lick Experience
Rise early to visit one of the most breathtaking spots on Earth, where vibrant macaws, parrots, and parakeets gather. On most clear mornings, you’ll witness dozens of these colorful birds descending to the riverbank to ingest clay—a truly unforgettable spectacle –
Species such as Mealy and Yellow- headed Amazon, Blue-headed Parrot and Dusky headed Parakeet, orange cheek parrot, white eyed parakeet, cobalt wing parakeet, descend at this clay lick. The clay lick is active at early mornings, after them the macaws start the show of coloors , the blue and yellow, red and green and the scarlet macaw can be observed in a big groups, sometimes over hundreds. Breakfast will be served at the place to be sure than you get to see this bird paradise with unlimited time.
Lunch.
Toucan trail will be used this time to go and look for band tailed Manakin, Round-tailed Manakin, Pale Rumped Trumpeteer and Pavonine Quetzal, crested oropendola, white fronted nunbird.
Dinner.
Overnight at Lodge .
Day :Bamboo Trail and Sandoval Lake .
Again early wake up to go to our Bamboo trail, and focus on the bamboo specialists. We will look for the endemic White-cheeked Tody Tyrant, Peruvian Recurvebill, Red-billed Scythebill, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Rufous-breasted Piculet, Brown-rumped Foliage Gleaner, Large- headed Flatbill, Dusky- tailed Flatbill, Dusky-cheeked Foliage-gleaner, Flammulated Bamboo-tyrant, Dot- winged and Ornate Antwren, White-lined Antbird, Rufous capped Nunlet, Pheasant Cuckoo, Striped Cuckoo and the rare yellow billed nunbird.
Breakfast.
Journey to the Stunning Sandoval Lake
After a scenic boat and car transfer back to Puerto Maldonado, we’ll head to the beautiful oxbow lake, Sandoval. Enjoy lunch on board during a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River. From there, embark on a 3-kilometer walk through the jungle to reach the canal, where a canoe will take you to the breathtaking lake.
During our walk we can see some more birds like, motmots, nunbirds, trogons, pigeons, guans, and maybe the horned screamer.
At oxbow lake Sandoval, which has palm swamp and grassland vegetation as well. We will try to spot Pale-vented Pigeon, Purple Gallinule, Slender-billed and Snail Kites, Rufescent Tiger-Herons, Sungrebe, Green Ibis, ringed kingfisher , amazon kingfisher, rufous chested kingfisher, pigmy kingfisher, red capped cardinal, Barred Antshrike, Short-tailed Pygmy Tyrant, Streaked Flycatcher, Boat-billed Flycatcher, Gray-fronted Dove, Ruddy Ground Dove and others and you must see the hoatzin.

Overnight at Sandoval lodge.
Days 5 :Departure from Sandoval Lake
After breakfast, we’ll take a canoe across the lake and then walk 3 kilometers back to our motorized boat. From there, we’ll transfer you to Puerto Maldonado, stopping at our office before heading to the airport. Depending on flight schedules, an early morning departure may be necessary
