BIRDING MACAW CLAYLICK AND SANDOVAL OWBOW LAKE
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Chuncho Lodge -Birdwatcher South East Peru .
Morning: Arrive from Cusco or Lima and drive to the Tambopata River.
Afternoon: Spot wildlife such as Scaled Pigeon and White-tailed Kite on the journey to Tambopata Lodge. Take a 15-minute boat ride to the lodge and explore the surrounding trails.
Evening: Optional owling experience.
Day 2: Birdwatcher South East Peru – Macaw Clay Lick and Canopy Tower
Early Morning: 45-minute boat ride to witness the Macaw Clay Lick, where numerous parrots and macaws gather for minerals.
Mid-Morning: Return to the lodge with opportunities to spot wildlife like Jaguars and Capybaras.
Afternoon: Explore trails for understory flocks and visit the canopy tower for elevated birdwatching.
Day 3: Sandoval Lake
Morning: After breakfast, travel by boat and hike to Sandoval Lake, a hotspot for diverse wildlife. Look out for Scaled Pigeon, Blue-headed Macaw, and more.
Midday: Cross the lake and spot unique species such as Hoatzin and Agami Heron. Enjoy lunch at the Sandoval Lake .
Afternoon: Additional lake exploration for sightings of Giant Otters and other wildlife.
Day 4: Final Explorations and Departure
Morning: Birdwatch in the lodge’s garden, seeking Rusty-margined Flycatcher and other species.
Late Morning: Return to Puerto Maldonado with a boat ride and Sandoval trail hike, then catch your flight.
ITINERARY
Birdwatcher South East Peru 4 days
Day 1 : Puerto Maldonado to Chuncho Lodge.
Upon arrival from Cusco or Lima, we’ll drive to the Tambopata River, This thrilling journey immerses you in the heart of the Amazon, where vibrant birdlife and lush landscapes await. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure as we delve into one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet .
Tambopata River where Scaled Pigeon, White-tailed Kite, Sothern Caracara, Brazilian Teal, Purus and White-throated Jacamar, Point-tailed Palmcreeper are possibilities. We finally take a 15 minutes boat to our lodge and spend the rest of the afternoon at the trails. Owling is a possibility that night .
Day 2 :Macaw Clay lick and canopy Tower
Before dawn, we’ll embark on a 45-minute boat ride to witness one of the rainforest’s most breathtaking natural spectacles. This early morning adventure offers an exclusive glimpse into the Amazon‘s awe-inspiring beauty as it comes alive with the first light Before dawn, we will embark on a 45-minute boat ride to witness one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the rainforest.
This early morning adventure offers an exclusive glimpse of the astonishing beauty of the Amazon, which comes to life at first light.
Where we will have a beautiful show in this natural area called rainforest (macaw clay lick.) , where every mourning hundreds of Psittacids visit it to get clay in order to obtain minerals and neutralize toxines of it´s daily diet. In first place, Mealy and Yellow-crowned Amazon, Blue-headed and Orange-cheecked Parrot, Dusky-headed, Tui and White-eyed Parakeets. While they are active, the larger Macaws are gathering to go to the wall of clay togheter. Red-and-Green, Scarlet and Blue-and-yellow Macaws are daily visitors. After mid-morning we take our boat back to the lodge on a slower, more leisurely search for Jaguars, Capybaras, Howler Monkeys and other wildlife are possibilites. In the Afternoon, after lunch we will take trails for understory mixed flocks and the canopy tower .
Day 3 Sandoval Lake
After a morning birdwatching session and breakfast at the lodge, we will return to Puerto Maldonado for a 20-minute boat ride along the Madre River of God. From there, embark on a 3km hike through the rainforest to reach Lake Sandoval, one of the most vibrant wildlife hotspots in the Amazon. Along the trail, keep your eyes open for the elusive scaly dove and the striking blue-headed macaw,
Scaled Pigeon, Blue-headed Macaw, Paradise Jacamar, Channel-billed Toucan and one of the few places to find Black-faced Cotinga. Once at the lake, we must cross it with our first visit to the lake and have our fist views to some specialities such as Hoatzin, Green Ibis, Gray-cowled Woodrail, etc. After lunch at the lodge , we go back to the lake in order to seek for Agami Heron, Boat-billed Heron, Sungrebe, Sunbittern, Greater Ani, Anhinga, Osprey, Gray-lined Hawk, Silvered Antbird, Toucans, Woodpeckers and a large etc. Finally, the lake is well known of harboring a familiy of one of the most emblematic beasts in the Neotropical Rain forest, Giant Otter
Day 4 :Sandoval and out .
After breakfast, we’ll explore the lodge’s garden, where you might spot the vibrant Rusty-margined Flycatcher ,Sulphury Flychatcher, Epaulet Oriole, Golden-bellied Euphonia among others. We later take the way to the Sandoval trail and boat ride back to Puerto Maldonado for our flight.
