Traditional and Contemporary Use
Ayahuasca and its ritual context extend throughout practically the entire Amazon basin; even extremely remote tribes show a deep knowledge of the use of Ayahuasca.
This concoction is considered the foundation of the magical-spiritual connection of more than 75 ethnic groups of the Upper and Lower Amazonia.
. It is consumed, among others, to diagnose and cure diseases and dysfunctions in general, to make important decisions, to ask the divinities for advice, to resolve personal conflicts. between families and between tribes, to communicate with the spirits of nature, to exercise their divinatory abilities and to elucidate mysteries, thefts, disappearances, to know if we have enemies, to know the spouse’s infidelity, to reinforce sexual activity, etc. It is alsoused in a negative way as a means to cause damage or ailments to an enemy, directing spells and negative energies during the ecstatic trance.
The Ayahuasca brew constitutes the key to empirical knowledge of all the traditional medical knowledge of the Amazon, which is used mainly for therapeutic and ritual purposes.
Ayahuasca has taken effect in the contemporary world through its use as a sacrament within some religions around the planet established under a system of mystical spirituality, based on the immediate experience of the numinous, leaving aside typical dogmatisms and acts of faith. of the ancient religions.
The Santo Daime,
which means “to give holiness”, is a religion originating in Brazil, product of the combination between the Christian religion and the practices of Amazonian Shamanism, which uses Ayahuasca, which they call “daime”, as its sacrament. Santo Daime currently has more than 20,000 followers called daimistas and maintains centers in the United States, Spain, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Japan, among others.
Currently there are 22 recognized religious groups that use Ayahuasca as a sacrament within their religion. It is considered sacred as the blood and spirit of Christ.
Ayahuasca has not been included in any list of prohibited substances for the sake of its religious use (thanks to the fact that it does not generate any type of dependency or toxicity), with which the Ayahuasca religions, like the peyote churches, are located in a certain way at the head of the world movement in favor of a liberalization of the consumption of psychotropic substances .
