DAY 1: Cusco to Vinicunca – The Adventure Begins!
Walking Time: Approx. 3 hours (Including a scenic picnic lunch) Total Distance: 13 km (8.08 miles) Terrain: Varied with some challenging ascents, offering stunning open landscapes.
Start your journey bright and early– At 5 a.m., we will pick you up from your hotel to embark on an incredible adventure to the world-renowned Rainbow Mountain, Vinicunca. After a scenic drive from Cusco to the charming village of Cusipata, which takes around 1.5 hours on a paved road, we transition onto a more rugged path for another 30 minutes until we reach Chillihuani Village.
Along the way, you’ll pass through picturesque Andean towns like Tintinko and Rio Tigre, and get your first glimpse of the mighty Surina Mountain from Llacto Village. This route also gives you a sneak peek of the natural wonders ahead as you pass through the local government control point of Cusipata, where llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas roam freely in their native habitat.
At Chillihuani, the real adventure begins- The hike toward Rainbow Mountain is filled with breathtaking panoramic views. As you trek through the rugged Andes, you’ll see the vibrant Red Valley and be dwarfed by the towering Ausangate Glacier. The path also winds by serene mountain lagoons, providing the perfect opportunity for memorable photos. After about 1.5 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the summit of Vinicunca, where the natural beauty of the Rainbow Mountain unfolds before you in all its colorful splendor.
After soaking in the surreal beauty and enjoying a picnic lunch amidst the stunning landscapes, we begin our descent, retracing our steps for about 1.5 hours back to the starting point. From here, our transport will be ready to whisk us back to Cusco. The return journey is filled with the satisfaction of having experienced one of the most stunning natural wonders on earth.
