ITINERARY

Amazon Peru Trip Tour 6 Days

Located in the southern region of Peru, near Puerto Maldonado, this destination becomes the perfect setting to witness one of the most impressive spectacles of nature. But it is not just a simple tour, but a journey that takes you to be part of the magic of the Amazon rainforest, where every detail becomes an unforgettable memory.

Start your adventure in an exclusive and strategic place, where nature unfolds before your eyes in such an intimate and fascinating way that you will feel like a privileged spectator. We will enter the heart of the jungle, camouflaged among the vegetation, to silently observe how the wild world comes to life around us. Here, in this secret corner of the Amazon, every movement becomes a perfect dance of nature.

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado Tour Amazon Peru Trip Tambopata:

Pick-up at Puerto Maldonado airport or bus station to head to our office to start the Tour Amazon Peru Trip, where you can leave unnecessary belongings for the trip. Then, we will transfer in our private vehicle, traveling for approximately one hour on a dirt road, where you can appreciate the changes along the way, such as different types of forests, traditional banana and citrus plantations, natural cattle ranches, streams, and more.

Upon reaching “El Infierno,” you will find Puerto Nuevo Port. We will embark on a boat and sail for 2 hours, observing wildlife along the river banks, focusing on birds such as jabiru, macaws, kingfishers, and some mammals like capybaras and tapirs. We may also spot white caimans and turtles. In the afternoon, we will arrive at our lodge located next to Tambopata River. After settling into our respective rooms, we will enjoy lunch and a brief rest.

In the afternoon, we will begin exploring the flora and fauna of Tambopata Natural Reserve and its medicinal plants. We will observe trees up to 600 years old, such as Dipteryx odorata (Almendrillos), which can reach heights of 100 meters, chiguaguacos or lapunas, as well as a variety of monkeys, birds, reptiles, and insects. Later, we will return to our lodge for dinner and take a night walk.

Day 2: Tour Amazon Peru Trip – Chuncho Clay Lick Tambopata:

We will start our day early heading to Tambopata River from Malinowski River mouth, passing through TORRE control point. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to visit a local interpretation center. We will continue our journey observing a change in landscape: Tambopata River flows faster and is surrounded by numerous branches creating a forest plain, with islands of large pebble beaches.

This is an ideal place to observe capybaras, Orinoco geese, cormorants, and caimans. After about 3 hours of navigation, we will reach our destination for today: the famous Chuncho Clay Lick! There, we will find a viewpoint from which we can appreciate this special and unforgettable spectacle full of colors and sounds. Every morning, flocks of parrots, macaws, and other birds gather to ingest clay, which helps them digest and neutralize toxins contained in jungle plants and trees.

Birds arrive here between 5 and 9 in the morning for the Tour Amazon Peru Trip before flying off in search of seeds and fruits in the jungle. The first visitors are usually smaller species like parakeets and parrots, followed by macaws that dazzle with their vibrant colors and sounds. After this spectacle, we will embark again on the boat to sail downstream for about 3 hours, returning to our lodge for lunch. After lunch, we will prepare for our next adventure: visiting the stunning El Gato waterfall! We will board the boat again to sail upstream for approximately two hours until we reach El Gato waterfall, where you can enjoy an unforgettable swim. In the afternoon, we will return to our lodge.

Optional: You can choose to participate in a nighttime activity to observe caimans on Tambopata River.

Day 3: Tour Amazon Trip Tambopata Reserve – Sandoval Lake:

After breakfast, we will boat for 10 minutes and then continue by land for two hours to Puerto Maldonado Port Captaincy. From there, we will board a boat and sail along Madre de Dios River, where you can observe different species along the river banks. After about half an hour, we will reach the checkpoint of Sandoval Lake Reserve.

We will go through a registration process and start a 5 km hike to reach Sandoval Lake Reserve. Once there, we will board a rowing canoe to reach our accommodation at Sandoval.

After lunch, we will navigate again through the lake to observe typical inhabitants such as giant otters, black caimans, the prehistoric hoatzin bird, herons, kingfishers, among others. After this activity, we will return to our accommodation for dinner.

At night, we will do a nocturnal observation activity in our canoe, where we will have the opportunity to row and observe the nightlife of animals such as crocodiles, birds, and monkeys. Our naturalist guide will provide detailed information about these animals as we observe them. We will spend the night at our accommodation.

Day 4: Tour Amazon Peru Trip – Macaw Palm Trees and Giant Otters:

Today we will start early around 5:00 in the morning at Sandoval Lake, where we will explore a swampy area where various palm trees grow in the water. This place is known as “licked palms” and attracts several species of macaws and other parrots that feed on the palm dust. This dust contains sodium, calcium, potassium, and other minerals that are beneficial for the digestion of these birds. After this experience, we will return to the lodge for breakfast.

Later, on our next excursion, we will explore the flora and fauna of the impressive Sandoval Lake Reserve. Here we will have the opportunity to spot monkeys, deer, wild pigs, tapirs, and spectacled bears, just to name a few examples. Lunch at the lodge.

Then, you will have free time to relax or swim in Sandoval Lake (don’t worry, during the day there are no piranhas or other dangerous animals in the water).

Later, we will board a boat to cross the lake to a place from where we can appreciate a beautiful sunset over the lake around 6:00 pm. At 7:00 pm we will return to the lodge for dinner. After waiting for moonlight, we will embark again in our canoe to row and observe crocodiles in the tranquility of the night.

Day 5: Tour Amazon Peru Trip Amazon Adventure – Piranha Fishing:

Today, after breakfast, we will start with a walk through the area. Then, we will return to the lodge to enjoy breakfast. Subsequently, we will prepare to leave Tambopata National Reserve “Sandoval Lake” and return to our accommodation on Madre de Dios River. There, we will board our boat and head to the lodge. After settling into our comfortable rooms and enjoying lunch, we will head towards a 27-meter high observation tower.

From this tower, we will reach a suspension bridge and a zip line platform. We will start by crossing the bridge that extends 89 meters among the trees, reaching a height of 37 meters above the branches of an ancient tree. This will be a unique opportunity to observe animals that are not normally visible from the ground. Afterwards, our guide and assistants will prepare us for an exciting experience.

With appropriate safety measures, we will slide along a cable and feel like birds flying over the forest, covering more than 190 meters in just a few seconds. This activity ensures fun, excitement, and a dose of adrenaline from the adventure.

Dinner and accommodation at our comfortable lodge along Madre de Dios River.

Day 6: Tour Amazon Peru Trip Return to Puerto Maldonado:

After breakfast, we will return by motorized canoe to Puerto Maldonado, coordinating flight and/or bus times that will take you to your next destination.

This marks the end of Sandoval Lake – Lago Sandoval – Tambopata Expeditions services.

TAMBOPATA RESERVE CENTER AMAZON TRIP:

Parrots are perhaps some of the most charming and intelligent birds of all, yet they are also among the most threatened. All species of parrots except four are listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and most parrots are endangered or critically endangered. Macaws are the largest and most spectacular parrots, ranging from northern Argentina to central Mexico, comprising seventeen existing species, one recently extinct in the wild, and ten critically endangered. The decline in macaw populations is largely due to anthropogenic reasons such as poaching and habitat alteration, and macaws struggle to recover because they are much more valuable for ecotourism. Studies suggest that a single bird can generate more income over its lifetime through tourism than its value as an object of illegal trade.

The Scarlet Macaw species (Ara macao) draws tourists and scientists from around the world to the Tambopata Research Center

in Madre de Dios, Peru, to admire its magnificence in the wild. By studying macaws, scientists uncover valuable information about their behavior, phylogeny, and breeding habits, enabling them to focus on specific conservation strategies rather than captive breeding efforts that resulted in a group of birds called ‘chicos’, which cannot function normally in the wild. Conservation efforts for macaws at the Tambopata Research Center effectively combine lucrative and informative ecotourism with scientific research exploring behavioral and environmental interactions of macaws, allowing the development of effective conservation strategies that protect wild macaw populations instead of relying on captive breeding efforts.

The Amazon is extremely diverse,

but large wildlife encounters are uncommon. Tambopata is one of the world’s most diverse and best-preserved rainforests. However, the vast majority of jungle diversity comes in the form of insects. The world record diversity of birds and mammals is mostly in the form of small and unspectacular species. Large spectacular species are rare, shy, unpredictable, and very difficult to see, with few notable exceptions. So, do not expect the wildlife density of African savannas or the Antarctic Peninsula.

We are not in Jurassic Park or Disneyland either. However, Tambopata is diverse, well-preserved, and exciting encounters occur on a regular basis.

At the Tambopata Research Center,

you will have some of the best opportunities in the Amazon to see jaguars, tapirs, giant river otters, harpy eagles, macaws, etc. However, the best opportunities in the Amazon for some of these species are very slim, though they do occur. On average, for example, we encounter about 20 jaguars per year, perhaps the most difficult to spot among the mentioned species.
