ITINERARY

Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata

Although Puerto Maldonado tambopata primarily serves as a transit point, it is also the starting point for visits and explorations in the Amazon rainforest. Tourists often use the city as a base to explore the Tambopata National Reserve, as well as to take excursions to Lake Sandoval and Lake Valencia

Founded on July 10, 1902, by the explorer Faustino Maldonado, Puerto Maldonado

played a crucial role as an outpost in the jungle during the rubber boom. Subsequently, starting from the 1940s, it gained significance with the discovery of rich alluvial gold deposits in the area.

Despite its history, Puerto Maldonado faces challenges in its economic development. Many of its streets still lack pavement, and basic public services are limited. The population, mostly of native origin belonging to indigenous tribes, engages in natural resource extraction. In recent years, the city has experienced an influx of Andean migrants attracted by gold mining, leading to significant environmental issues.

The timber industry and gold panning are the city’s main economic activities. Despite its size, Puerto Maldonado has basic services such as banks, a commercial area, pharmacies, small hotels, bars, nightclubs, and restaurants offering local cuisine. Additionally, it has a river port and the Padre José Aldamiz airport, facilitating access to the city from other regions.

In recent years, the construction of a bridge over the Madre de Dios River has revitalized Puerto Maldonado’s economy by allowing the crossing of the Interoceanic Highway and facilitating vehicle transit from Brazil to the southern ports of Peru.
