Bahuaja Sonene National Park: A Refuge of Biodiversity and Fishing in the Peruvian Amazon

Located in the southeastern region of Peru, Bahuaja Sonene National Park (PNBS) is one of the most diverse natural areas on the planet. This park—key for ecotourism and responsible sport fishing in the Peruvian Amazon—protects an incredible variety of ecosystems, endemic species, and unique landscapes that extend from the lowland rainforest to the Andean yungas.

Origins and Purpose of Bahuaja Sonene National Park

Officially created in 1996 and expanded in 2000 with the incorporation of the former Pampas del Heath National Sanctuary, PNBS was established to preserve representative ecosystems from two major biogeographic regions:

  • Subtropical Amazon
  • Subtropical Yungas

It also includes palm savannas, a unique ecosystem in Peru, making the park a true ecological mosaic.

Main Ecosystems of PNBS

The park contains seven life zones and is organized into three main ecological formations:

1. Amazon Lowland Rainforest

  • Altitude: Up to 800 m a.s.l.
  • Climate: Rainy, warm, and humid
  • Vegetation: Dense forest with tall trees and extraordinary biodiversity
  • Notable wildlife: Monkeys, big cats, exotic birds, reptiles, and fish

2. Subtropical Yungas

Altitude: From 800 to 3,600 m a.s.l.

Features: Evergreen forests, high humidity, and varied microclimates

Importance: A climatic refuge for many species during past and current climate shifts. Home to endemic species adapted to specific conditions.

3. Palm Savannas (Pampas del Heath)

The only ecosystem of its kind in Peru

Landscape: Open plains with grasslands and palm trees

Emblematic species:

Maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus)

Marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus)
These species are found nowhere else in the country.

Exceptional Biodiversity

Bahuaja Sonene National Park is an unmatched wildlife refuge. Key highlights include:

57.5% of Peru’s Amazonian mammals live within this park (Pacheco et al., 2009).

43% of all bird species recorded in Peru are found inside PNBS.

High concentrations of endemic and rare species, many adapted to unique microhabitats.

Fishing in Tambopata: A Sustainable Attraction within PNBS

Alongside scientific research and conservation, PNBS allows controlled ecotourism and responsible sport fishing, especially in areas such as:

  • Tambopata River
  • Lake Yacumama
  • Amazon fishing zones near eco-lodges

Amazon Fishing Tambopata – What Makes It Unique?

  • 100% natural and protected environment
  • Private, guided fishing with a sustainability focus
  • Promotion of catch & release to protect species
  • Presence of iconic fish such as payara, paco, catfish, gamitana, and piranhas

Climate Change and the Role of the Yungas

The yungas of Bahuaja Sonene have historically served as climate refuges for many species during glacial periods or global warming events. Thanks to their microclimates and diverse topography:

Species migrate vertically instead of geographically

Altitudinal variations allow the coexistence of flora and fauna adapted to different conditions

This makes PNBS a vital resource in the face of current climate change.

Conclusion: Bahuaja Sonene, a Natural Treasure of Peru

Bahuaja Sonene National Park, together with Amazon Fishing Tambopata experiences, is an unparalleled destination for travelers seeking to connect with nature, practice responsible sport fishing, and support the conservation of Peru’s natural heritage.

Visiting this park is not only an unforgettable adventure—it is also an act of support for the richest biodiversity in the country.
