Choquequirao Trek – 3 Days (Marathon)

General Description

Start Point: Pickup from your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco or the Sacred Valley between 4:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m.
End Point: Return to your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco around 10:30 p.m.
Departure: Daily. Groups of 2 can start the trek regardless of the reservation type (individual or group). We guarantee that clients will not be transferred to other operators, unlike most local agencies.

Distance: Marathon trek over 3 days.

Physical Level: Level 4. It is recommended to acclimate in Cusco for at least 2 days prior to the trek to adapt to the altitude.
Maximum Altitude: 3,900 meters above sea level.
Transport: Includes round-trip bus transportation between Cusco and Capuliyoq.
Accommodation: Camping along the route.
Included Meals: 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 2 dinners.

Day 2: Chiquisca – Choquequirao -Peru Awesome Choquequirao Trek.

ITINERARY

Peru Awesome Choquequirao Trek 3 Days

Day 1: Cusco to Chiquisca – Your Choquequirao Adventure Begins
Early Departure and Scenic Drive

We kick off our adventure bright and early at 5:00 AM. After a scenic 4-hour drive, we’ll arrive in the charming town of Cachora, the gateway to our Choquequirao trek.

Starting the Trek –From Cachora, we begin our hike, with our equipment efficiently transported by mules or horses. As we ascend, we’ll be treated to stunning views of the majestic Padrayoc mountain and the snow-capped peaks of Wayna Cachora. The changing landscapes—from sheer cliffs to snowy vistas—set the stage for an unforgettable journey.

Breathtaking Views -En route, we’ll encounter the awe-inspiring Apurimac Canyon, renowned for its dramatic depth. From this vantage point, the ancient site of Choquequirao becomes visible in the distance, hinting at the adventure that awaits.

Climbing to Chiquisca-Our hike continues up to Capuliyoc, where the trail leads us to our first campsite at Chiquisca. This segment of the trek covers approximately 19 kilometers and takes around 8 hours, passing through the quaint settlement of La Colmena (2,870 meters above sea level).

Day 2: Chiquisca to Choquequirao – The Pinnacle of Your Trek
A Challenging Yet Rewarding Journey

Prepare for an exhilarating day as you tackle the most demanding part of your trek. We’ll start early with a hearty breakfast to fuel our climb.

Crossing the Apurimac River –The adventure begins with a dramatic descent to cross the Apurimac River. This is the start of a challenging ascent, but don’t worry—we’ll take frequent breaks to catch our breath and soak in the stunning natural beauty around us.

Santa Rosa Stop –We’ll pause in the Santa Rosa area, where you can purchase some local snacks and recharge. Following this, we’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch at a scenic high spot, marking the end of the toughest stretch of the day.

Scenic Trek to Choquequirao -With the hardest part behind us, the remainder of the hike to Choquequirao is more gradual, with gentle ups and downs. After approximately two hours, we’ll reach our second campsite, beautifully positioned at an altitude of 3,100 meters (10,170 feet).

Explore and Relax –From camp, take in breathtaking views of the terraced fields of Choquequirao Bajo. If time allows, you can hike up to the summit for a chance to see majestic condors soaring in the sky.

Day 3: Choquequirao to Cusco – The Journey Home
Morning Exploration

Start your day with a delicious breakfast before diving into an immersive guided tour of Choquequirao. Our expert guides will share fascinating insights and stories about this ancient Incan site, enriching your understanding of its history and significance.

Descent Through the Canyon –After exploring Choquequirao, we’ll begin our descent through the dramatic Apurimac Canyon. Enjoy the scenic beauty as we make our way back to the Apurimac River. Along the way, you’ll pass through Playa San Ignacio, a serene spot perfect for a break. Note: While relaxing here, be prepared for a few mosquitoes.

Lunch and Final Ascent -We’ll enjoy a satisfying lunch at Playa San Ignacio before tackling a gentle uphill trek to Capuliyoc. This final stretch offers a chance to reflect on your journey and take in the last of the stunning Andean vistas.

Return to Cusco -At Capuliyoc, our vehicle will be ready to transport us back to Cusco. You’ll arrive in the city by the late afternoon, concluding your memorable trek with comfort and ease.

What to Bring to Choquequirao Hike 3 Days?

  • Bring what is essential for the 3-day Choquequirao Trek to enter and exit the Apurímac Canyon. During the day, lightweight walking shorts and a lightweight, quick-release long-sleeved shirt are recommended. Only at night in Marampata is it cold because of the Padreyoc glacier.
  • Daypack: small, comfortable, lightweight hiking backpack.
    One pair of trekking poles per person! Trekking poles are highly recommended.
    To navigate Chiquisca and Marampata at night and start the walk in the dark, one headlamp per person is needed.
    Good, sturdy, light shoes or walking boots with ankle support
    Warm and light fleece jacket for hiking.
    A light, warm hiking jacket for low temperatures for Marampata
    Hats (to protect yourself from the sun)
    Essential Sunglasses
    Lightweight rain ponchos for December to April
    Plastic bags for dirty and wet clothes
    A personal grooming kit for hiking
    Sun protection cream (SPF 45 or higher is recommended).
    Insect repellent “In cream allowed inside the citadel, let’s conserve the flora and fauna of the seventh-world wonder.”
    Bandages or moleskin.
    Water bottle: “It is forbidden to introduce non-recyclable plastics in Choquequirao; take precautions and bring reusable bottles.”
    Three liters of water per person, or at least two liters daily! There are local stores in Capuliyoc, Cocamasana, Chiquisca, Santa Rosa, and Marampata to stock up on bottled water. Streams of water are also available in specific places during the trek to Choquequirao.
    Extra money for snacks, bottled water, etc.
