ITINERARY
Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 2 days :
TOURS DAY 1: CUSCO – KM 104 – WIÑAY WAYNA – MACHU PICCHU
Your Inca Trail adventure begins!
Day 1: Cusco to Machu Picchu
Your Inca Trail adventure begins with an early 4 am pickup from your comfortable Cusco hotel. After a scenic ride to Ollantaytambo in private transportation, your guide will provide a packed lunch for your daypack. The train departs Ollantaytambo at 6:10 am, and you’ll have an hour to enjoy the view and have breakfast (not included). You can either get a picnic breakfast from your hotel or bring your own.
Your trek starts at Km104, known for its breathtaking views, at 2,000m (6,560 ft) above sea level. After crossing the Urubamba River on a charming footbridge and showing your passport at the checkpoint, you’ll explore your first nearby Inca site. The first 1.5 hours involve a gentle uphill climb with lookout points offering panoramic views of the Urubamba River. Be prepared for potential dampness or rain as you pass through different microclimates, including cloud forest. The next 1.5 hours feature a slightly steeper uphill section, leading to a magnificent waterfall.
Upon crossing the bridge below the waterfall, capture photos and gaze at the spectacular Wiñay Wayna at 2,600m (8,500 ft) above sea level.
Your guide will share insights about these remarkable Inca ruins, nestled in lush sub-tropical jungle. After a short 5-minute walk, lunch is served at the Wiñay Wayna campground, the last for those on the Classic Inca Trail. Nearby, you’ll find outdoor sinks and restrooms. Enjoy a gourmet lunch surrounded by tropical flowers, and let us know about any dietary restrictions.
After lunch, embark on a mostly flat walk to the Sun Gate, where you’ll catch your first glimpse of Machu Picchu! The hour-long walk includes gentle terrain, followed by steep stairs carved by the Inca. Once you reach these stairs, you’re almost at the Sun Gate, offering a breathtaking view of Machu Picchu. Capture the moment before the final 60-minute descent, which provides numerous photo opportunities of Machu Picchu from a unique vantage point. Along the way, you’ll encounter more significant Inca sites.
Arriving at Machu Picchu in the afternoon allows you to explore with fewer tourists. Capture beautiful photos and enjoy the experience before taking a bus to Aguas Calientes for hotel check-in.
