Day 1: Welcome to the Amazon Rainforest and Adventure in the Tambopata National Reserve – Monkey Island and Nature Walk
We’ll begin our journey with a transfer to the port of Puerto Maldonado, where we’ll board a boat for a one-hour ride along the Madre de Dios River to our lodge deep in the Amazon rainforest.
Upon arrival, we’ll be greeted with a refreshing tropical fruit juice and settle into our rooms for a short rest.
Introductory Walk through the Tropical Rainforest
After resting, we’ll begin a two-hour introductory walk along the trails of the Tambopata National Reserve, guided by a local expert in Amazonian nature. During the hike, we’ll admire ancient trees over five hundred years old and observe a fascinating diversity of wildlife, including toucans, orioles, parrots, monkeys, snakes, and butterflies.
This first experience will allow us to connect with the magic of the Peruvian jungle, within a protected reserve of more than 278,000 hectares.
Visit to Monkey Island
After lunch, we’ll cross the river to visit the famous Monkey Island, a natural habitat located just across from our lodge. Here, several species of Amazonian monkeys live freely, including the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, red-backed titi monkey, and white-faced capuchin.
During the visit, we’ll observe these playful animals in their natural environment and learn about their behavior and their role in the Amazon ecosystem.
Afterward, we’ll return to the lodge to relax and unwind.
Night Caiman Search
As night falls, we’ll head out once again on the Madre de Dios River for an exciting nocturnal boat excursion in search of caimans. Using flashlights, we’ll explore the riverbanks where these impressive reptiles rest.
With a bit of luck, we might also spot the capybara, the world’s largest rodent, which can weigh up to 60 kilograms (130 pounds), along with other nocturnal species native to the jungle.
We’ll return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious Amazonian dinner and rest surrounded by the soothing sounds of the rainforest.
Day 2 – Exploration of Sandoval Lake and Night Walk in the Amazon Rainforest
After an early breakfast, we’ll begin our adventure with a short boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to the entrance of Sandoval Lake, one of the most iconic destinations within the Tambopata National Reserve.
After passing the park checkpoint, we’ll embark on a 3-kilometer (2-mile) hike through the lush tropical rainforest. Along the way, our naturalist guide will explain the local flora and the importance of this ecosystem, home to an incredible diversity of species.
Upon reaching Sandoval Lake, the natural habitat of piranhas and giant river otters, we’ll board a rowboat to explore its calm waters. From there, we’ll be able to spot a variety of Amazonian birds and mammals such as hoatzins, cormorants, jacanas, herons, eagles, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black capuchins, tamarins, and sloths.
With a bit of luck, we may encounter a family of giant river otters, an endangered species that can reach up to two meters in length, or even the black caiman, the largest reptile in the region, which can grow over four meters long.
After this unforgettable experience, we’ll return to the lodge to enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch and take a short rest.
Night Walk in the Jungle
At night, we’ll prepare for a guided night walk, a unique opportunity to discover the wildlife of the Amazon rainforest under the light of the moon. We’ll observe insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals that only appear once the sun sets.
We’ll end the day with a delicious dinner at the lodge and a well-deserved rest.
Day two offers a captivating blend of exploration, wildlife encounters, and the thrill of venturing into the nocturnal world of the Amazon. With each moment, you’ll feel closer to the heart of this incredible ecosystem.
Day 3 – Jungle Adventure: Zipline or Hanging Bridge and Return to Puerto Maldonado
We’ll begin our day very early, at 5:30 a.m., waking up to the unique sounds of the Amazon rainforest. After breakfast, we’ll prepare for one of the most thrilling experiences of the trip: a zipline adventure through the giant trees of the jungle.
At more than 45 meters high, we’ll glide along double safety cables capable of supporting over three tons, feeling the adrenaline and freedom of flying above the tropical canopy. Before starting, our professional guide will give a brief safety talk on how to use the harness and follow the security guidelines to ensure a safe and unforgettable experience.
This activity is designed for adventure and nature lovers, offering an impressive panoramic view of the Madre de Dios rainforest.
Optional Activity: Hanging Bridge in the Amazon Jungle
As an alternative, you may choose one of the following activities included in the tour:
- Zipline
- Hanging Bridge
If you wish to do both activities, you can do so for an additional cost.
The Hanging Bridge is a fascinating adventure that allows you to walk among the treetops at a height of 30 meters, enjoying panoramic views of the Madre de Dios River. From the suspended platforms, you’ll be able to spot tropical birds such as toucans, macaws, and other species native to the Peruvian jungle.
After these exciting activities, we’ll return to the lodge to rest and have lunch. Finally, we’ll head back to the city of Puerto Maldonado, where you’ll be transferred to the airport for your departing flight.
