This immersive tour takes you through diverse ecosystems, where you’ll encounter exotic wildlife, from playful giant river otters to colorful macaws, and experience the untamed beauty of one of Peru’s most biodiverse regions.

Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado – Journey to Sandoval Lake

Your adventure begins upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, where our friendly representative will greet you at the airport or bus terminal. After a brief transfer to our office to store any unnecessary luggage, we head to a local port to board a motorboat and cruise down the scenic Madre de Dios River.

Along the way, keep an eye out for fascinating wildlife, including turtles, lizards, monkeys, and even caimans basking on the riverbanks. As we approach the Sandoval Lake Lodge, you’ll be greeted by the sounds of the jungle, and after settling into your lodge, enjoy a delicious lunch.

Day 2: Sunrise Wildlife at Sandoval Lake – Giant River Otters

Rise early to witness the magical sunrise over Sandoval Lake, one of the most serene and biodiverse spots in the Amazon Trips. At this hour, giant river otters are most active, making this the perfect time to observe them in their natural habitat. You’ll also have the chance to spot hoatzins, a prehistoric-looking bird, and other wildlife along the lake’s edges.

After returning to the lodge for a hearty breakfast, we venture into the jungle for a guided walk through the lush rainforest. This immersive experience will introduce you to a variety of species, including monkeys, toucans, peccaries, and maybe even tapirs. Learn about the medicinal plants the indigenous communities use and marvel at the giant trees and strangling lianas that dominate the landscape. This walk is a true Tarzan-esque adventure.

Optional evening activity: Take part in a night walk to discover the mysteries of the jungle after dark.

Overnight at Sandoval Lake Lodge.

Day 3: Macaw Palm Tree Collpa and Wildlife Spotting

After another early start, we head to the Collpa de Palmeras – a unique palm tree swamp where hundreds of colorful macaws and other parrots gather to feed on the mineral-rich sawdust. This fascinating behavior, known as “salt-licking”, helps the birds digest their food. Witnessing this spectacle is a highlight of the trip!

We then return to the lodge for breakfast before embarking on a guided jungle walk to spot more wildlife. Depending on the time of day, you may encounter wild boars, tapirs, deer, and even spectacled bears.

After lunch at the lodge, enjoy some free time to relax or take a refreshing swim in the lake. Rest assured, Lake Sandoval is piranha-free during daylight hours, making it safe for a refreshing dip.

In the afternoon, we head back to the lake to catch a breathtaking sunset from the water. As the day turns to night, we embark on a moonlit boat ride to spot alligators lurking in the shadows.

Overnight at Sandoval Lake Lodge.

Day 4: Farewell to Sandoval Lake – Return to Puerto Maldonado

On your final morning, take a canoe ride across Sandoval Lake and enjoy the peaceful surroundings one last time. We then begin our journey back, trekking through the jungle to the checkpoint before boarding a boat for the return ride along the Madre de Dios River.
