Tour Day 1: Rainforest to Puerto Maldonado Monkey Island
Our representative welcomes you and picks you up at the Puerto Maldonado airport/bus terminal to take you to our office where you can leave your larger luggage that is not needed for the trip. You should bring a backpack for personal items and more.
Next, we transfer you to the Port of Capitania where you board a motorboat and cruise the Madre de Dios River for about an hour. Along the way, we observe various species of flora and animals such as turtles, birds, capybaras, and sunbathing lizards on the river banks. We briefly stop at Monkey Island (Isla de los Monos) to see some of its 3 species of monkeys.
Later, we arrive at Eco Tambo Lodge where you are welcomed with fresh fruit juice.
Afterwards, we settle into double private rooms and enjoy a brief rest. Later, we follow jungle trails while our experienced tour guide explains about local animals and plants, such as trees that are over 500 years old, medicinal plants, toucans, oropendolas, trogons, macaws, monkeys, butterflies, etc. Then we return for dinner. A night walk in the rainforest completes the tour.
Tour Day 2: Viajes Selva – Exploring Sandoval Lake Reserve
After breakfast, we board a motorboat and navigate the Madre de Dios River until we reach a control post of the Sandoval Lake Reserve and begin a 3 km hike to reach Sandoval Lake. There, we take a canoe that brings us to the center of the lake where lunch is served while observing its typical inhabitants: giant river otters, black caimans, pumas, a prehistoric bird called shansho, herons, cormorants, kingfishers, Jesus birds (or water lilies), red howler monkeys, common squirrel monkeys, white-fronted capuchins, sloths, etc. At the end of the day, we return to the lodge for dinner, showers, and overnight stay. A night walk in the Amazon rainforest tour.

Local representatives from the animal kingdom include birds, mammals, reptiles, butterflies, etc.
Then, we try piranha fishing in the Gamitana River.
After that, we return to the lodge for lunch and a brief rest. Next, an adrenaline activity awaits us as we attempt the canopy walk.
A walk across a hanging bridge to observe the Amazonian landscape from another perspective . But don’t worry, this isn’t the only adrenaline sport you can experience today, as you have the opportunity to do zip lining immediately afterward.
The zip line is above the trees at a height of 30 meters! Finally, we return to our lodge for dinner and sleep.

Peru: Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja Sonene National Park
Tropical mountain rainforest, subtropical low mountain rainforest, semi-saturated Amazonian rainforest, subtropical lowland, and four transitional life zones: subtropical moist forest to tropical moist forest, tropical moist forest to subtropical, and tropical mountain moist forest to very moist subtropical.
The protected area features diverse ecosystems such as forest terraces, mid-floodplain forests, high-floodplain terraces, high clay soil forests, sandy-clayey Amazonian forests, high sandy soil forests, permanently flooded swamp forests, seasonal floodable areas, and lakes or lake-related rivers winding through the area, palm swamps, and flood-prone areas.
Rivers and streams have patterns of rise and fall depending on the season, whether rainy season (November to March) or dry season (May to September) respectively.
Biodiversity:
The protected area harbors much of Peru’s Amazonian biodiversity. It presents a diversity of Tambopata habitats, leading to the existence of abundant species. On the eastern slope of the Andes, high levels of endemism can be observed, so it is expected that the protected area will also record a high concentration of high endemism and diversity in various biological organism groups.
The Tambopata River basin is considered one of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems. As an indicator of this vast richness, it can be mentioned that in an area of just 550 hectares, 91 mammal species, 570 bird species, 127 reptile and amphibian species, 94 fish species, among other surprising records, were found.
Vegetation:
The Tambopata River near Madre de Dios, close to the foothills of Puno, is plagued by bamboo clumps, the unique habitat of various bird and mammal species. Typical flooded forest plains and low mountains are found. The vegetation in the national reserve (+/- 1400 species of vascular plants) is quite typical of the southwestern Peruvian Amazon basin.
The Heath River and its grasslands are a unique ecosystem in Peru. The grasslands are periodically flooded pastures. These are renewed through occasional burns in the dry season, preventing the advance of invasive vegetation from the Amazon rainforest. Small forests or groups of trees with varied vegetation grow as islands in the grassland.
The flatter areas are dominated by grasses, rushes, and other herbs with some scattered shrubs. In the protected area, a high diversity of plant communities can be found, including several economically important Amazon rainforest species such as cedar (Cedrela odorata), mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), tornillo (Cedrelinga sp.), chestnut (Bertholetia excelsa), palms like pona (Iriartea ventricosa), aguaje (Mauritia flexuosa), huasaí (Euterpe sp.), ungurahui (Jessenia bataua).
Wildlife:
Large populations of protected species have been found in the area that are found in many parts of the Amazon rainforest.
