ITINERARY

Visit Amazing Sandoval Lake 3 days

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Amazon Rainforest Sandoval Lake

Your journey begins with Amazon Travel Rainforest Trip pick-up from the airport or bus terminal in the city of Puerto Maldonado, by our guide or transfer, and transfer to the office for check-in, where you can leave your large suitcases/backpacks and take only what you need for your adventure in the Peruvian Amazon.

Then, transfer to the port to embark on an outboard boat for an exciting tour navigating the Madre de Dios River. Along this journey, keep your eyes wide open to observe a wide variety of captivating creatures, such as turtles sunbathing on fallen logs, fishing birds, monkeys, and caimans. As we progress, the diverse wildlife offers a fascinating welcome to the tropical rainforest.

Next, we will make a stop at the Sandoval Lake Reserve control post to register. From there, we will begin a 3 km (1.5 hours) hike through the primary forest, immersed in the Amazon jungle, which step by step takes us to the heart of the reserve. We’ll reach a small port in the middle of the jungle where we’ll take a rowing canoe along a winding path, observing the wildlife. After 1 hour crossing Lake Sandoval, we’ll arrive at the next port, a 5-minute walk to our lodge for accommodation in respective rooms.

After a delicious lunch, we will embark on a rowing canoe to explore the realm of the Amazon rainforest. During this ride, you will have the incredible opportunity to meet iconic inhabitants such as majestic giant river otters, black caimans, and the charming prehistoric bird called shansho. This Sandoval Lake comes to life with the presence of birds such as herons, cormorants, eagles, and kingfishers; each of these species plays a role in this vibrant ecological ecosystem.

As the day passes and night turns into a quieter life with the songs of birds, frogs, and some mammals.

After dinner, we return for a new adventure, this time under the blanket of night, to witness a captivating spectacle. This night expedition offers a great and unique opportunity to observe other species such as birds, nocturnal monkeys aboard the lake, and caimans that come to life in the darkness. Our experienced naturalist guide will provide valuable insights into these fascinating creatures, making this nocturnal encounter truly unforgettable.

We spend the night at the lodge.

Day 2: Flora and Fauna Wildlife Palm Tree Clay Lick and Enchanting Adventure in the Amazon Rainforest.

Today we wake up very early as we embark on a captivating adventure near the Reserve. Our destination is to observe the «Clay Lick of Palm Trees,» a refuge where several palm trees thrive in the waters, creating a unique swampy ecosystem. This place acts as a magnet for a diverse variety of parrot and macaw species and other species attracted by these palms, which are very rich in essential minerals containing sodium, calcium, and potassium, as their barks help them with digestion. Get ready for a vibrant spectacle as these colorful birds gather to feed, displaying their vibrant and very attractive plumage. After this charming experience, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious breakfast.

With renewed energy, we will begin our next expedition to explore the extraordinary flora and fauna of the tropical rainforest and the primary forests that guard many secrets and mysteries of this living nature. As we traverse the landscape, keep your eyes peeled to appreciate charismatic monkeys, deer, wild boars, tapirs, and even the distinctive spectacled bears that call this realm home.

Return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious lunch to replenish strength before the next adventure.

You will have free time to rest and enjoy the refreshing crystal-clear waters of Lake Sandoval, highly recommended without any danger.

As the day transforms into night, we embark on a canoe excursion across the lake, seeking the perfect observation point to witness the impressive sunset bathing the lake in a warm glow and fascinating landscapes. At 7 pm, we gather at the lodge for a delicious dinner.

With anticipation as the moonlight increases, we will have a beautiful and unique opportunity to captivate the realm of wildlife with our expert guide once again providing enlightening knowledge, making this nighttime excursion to observe insects, birds, nocturnal monkeys, frogs, toads, tarantulas, ants, grasshoppers, birds, and with the opportunity to observe some large animals, tapirs, sloths, deer, armadillos, rodents, wild pigs, etc. It will be an experience to remember.

IT IS A SILENT AND COOL MORNING IN THE TROPICAL JUNGLE TRAVEL .

As we begin to come into view, the meandering lake stretches out like a perfect dark green mirror in front of us. Thin blankets of mist float over the water, casting a mystical veil over the vast emptiness. The eye wanders over the scene. Green curtains of vegetation, a mixture of lianas, branches and leaves of giant grasses and palm trees, enter the image. Mirror images along the shorelines frame the scene and create a surreal setting for the lead actors.

Suddenly, there they are: the main actors of the matinee have begun their performance. Slender, dark brown bodies catapult out of the green water like dolohins, disappearing a second later. The splash in the water hide heavy breathing Is it five or twenty? Sparkling jewels splash in all directions as they shake the water off their heads after diving. One of them now bounces to the surface clutching a silver fish in its powerful legs.

Refusing to die, the character writhes from side to side. Large, webbed, glove-like feet, studded with sharp claws, make fighting a futile effort. Heavy blows seal the fate of this fish. Now they become other details evident when that master hunter slowly backs through the water intent on eating his first breakfast of the day. The small, flat head, not much larger than a man’s fist, is surrounded by slightly bulging eyes. The long whiskers are

Giant River Otters in the Rainforest Travel .

The overall body size is longer than most males, and the weight is that of a large dog. Among predators it is at the top of the league, and its complex social behavior and organization into family groups put it in a class of its own. His cooperative hunting strategy, the fruit of which he is now rapidly disappearing into powerful jaws, gave this predator its Spanish name: Lobo de río or river wolf; the one who hunts in packs This drama, which still plays out daily in the backwaters of the Manu River, was once a common sight from Venezuela in the northeast along the Amazon basin to northern Argentina. Less than fifty years ago the man began to rewrite this play as a tragedy.

The thin, short-haired coat of this predatory fish began to become a sign of wealth and luxury in the distant industrial centers of North America and Western Europe, elegant clothing and high society. Monthly, even yearly, wages were involved when giant otter pelts were traded. Between 1946 and 1971, a total of 24,282 skins were exported from Peru alone. The final act had begun and one of the most magnificent
