Tambopata Expeditions

Tambopata Expeditions: The Tambopata National Reserve and adjacent Bahuaja-Sonene National Park in the Peruvian Amazon contain one of the most pristine and diverse rainforests on earth. Created in 1990 to protect the watersheds of the Tambopata and Candamo Rivers, this area became a natural protected corridor when joined with Madidi National Park in Bolivia. Currently, these three contiguous Amazon Reserves comprise the largest protected zone of tropical rainforest in the world, covering a total of 3.5 million hectares; this is an area two-thirds the size of Costa Rica and nearly the size of Switzerland.

Area Tambopata: Tambopata National Reserve, 274,690 ha; Bahuaja–Sonene National Park, 1,091,416 ha Location: Southeastern Peru, Madre de Dios region – Puerto Maldonado. Flight Time: 55 min from Cusco city. 1 hr 35 min (direct) from Lima city.

A rainforest is an expansive territory with high annual rainfall, very dense plant growth, and a relatively warm temperature in tambopata rainforest. Two-thirds of the world’s plant and animal species make their home in these jungle regions, and it is believed that there are hundreds of millions more species that are yet to be discovered.

The Tambopata National Reserve—adjacent to Sandoval Lake Lodge Reserve Amazonica – is one of the last easily accessible virgin tropical rainforests in the world. The reserve, with its 274,690-hectare (678,774-acre) area, offers a wealth of biodiversity as well as magnificent natural landscapes. Puerto Maldonado, known as the “Capital of Biodiversity,” is the largest city of the Tambopata Region. Overlooking the confluence of the Tambopata Lodge and Madre de Dios rivers, Puerto Maldonado is 400 meters (1,312 feet) above sea level, 650 km (404 miles) from Cusco, and 15 km (9 miles) upriver from the Sandoval Lake lodge.

Though the rainforest is known to host a vast number of species, the animals tend to avoid human presence, making opportunities to observe them variable and unpredictable. Nevertheless, the region’s diverse plant life offers endless opportunity for discovery; the lakes and wetlands invite exploration, and the varied rainforest ecosystems hold the promise of new insight and understanding.

For a complete and updated list of animals and recent sightings please visit our website www.sandovallake.com. The richness of the Amazon Basin creates a spectacular arena for birdwatching and other related activities. Some 590 different bird species, including toucans, tanagers, flycatchers, and colorful macaws, have been sighted around the reserve. Due to the tropical climate of the region it is common to observe exotic insects such as spiders, beetles, ants, and centipedes near the lodge.

Tropical Tambopata rainforests have been called the “earth’s lungs” because they are essential to recycling carbon dioxide into oxygen. The Tambopata rainforest has also been called the “world’s largest pharmacy,” because of the many natural medicines discovered there.
