ITINERARY

Amazon Wildlife Peru – 5 Days

Explore the majesty of the Peruvian Amazon with our 5-day tour to Tambopata, an authentic experience that connects nature, adventure, and wildlife. This journey includes a visit to the impressive Sandoval Lake, home to giant otters, caimans, and exotic birds, as well as an excursion to the famous Macaw Clay Lick, where you’ll witness these colorful birds in their natural habitat, gathering at dawn in a truly unique spectacle.

Enjoy jungle hikes, boat rides, wildlife spotting, and the tranquility of a setting that feels frozen in time. Ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking a genuine connection with Amazonian biodiversity.

DAY 1: Puerto Maldonado – Monkey Island – Travel Amazonia Rainforest

We welcome you at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus terminal, where our transfer will meet you and take you to our office. There, you can safely store any luggage not needed for the trip. Next, we head to the local port (Puerto Capitanía) to board a motorboat and cruise along the Madre de Dios River for about one hour.

Along the way, we’ll observe various species of flora and fauna, such as turtles, birds, capybaras, and basking caimans. We’ll make a short stop at Monkey Island to see some of the three monkey species living there.

Later, we arrive at Eco Tambo Lodge, where we’re welcomed with a refreshing glass of fresh juice. After settling into our comfortable private double rooms, we’ll enjoy a short rest.

In the afternoon, we explore the vast jungle trails with our professional naturalist guide, who will explain the fascinating flora and fauna of the Amazon—ancient trees over 500 years old, medicinal plants, toucans, oropendolas, trogons, macaws, monkeys, butterflies, and more. We then return to the lodge for dinner.

DAY 2: Sandoval Lake Exploration – Travel Amazonia Rainforest

After breakfast, we board a motorboat on the Madre de Dios River to reach the checkpoint for the Sandoval Lake Reserve. After registering, we’ll hike about 5 km (approximately 1.5 hours) through the jungle to reach the lake.

There, we take a canoe into the heart of the lake, where we’ll have lunch and observe native wildlife such as giant river otters, black caimans, pumas, prehistoric hoatzin birds, herons, cormorants, kingfishers, “Jesus birds,” red howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, white-faced capuchins, sloths, and more.

At the end of the day, we return to the lodge for dinner, a refreshing shower, and a restful night.

Optional: Night walk at no additional cost.

DAY 3: Flora and Wildlife – Travel Amazonia Rainforest

In the morning, we’ll hike through the vast Amazon rainforest that surrounds us, discovering the incredible biodiversity of the region. Among the many plant species, you’ll find medicinal plants, ayahuasca, and giant, ancient rainforest trees such as Brazil nut trees.

We’ll also see local wildlife such as birds, mammals, reptiles, and butterflies. Later, we’ll try our luck fishing for piranhas in the Gamitana River.

After lunch and a short rest at the lodge, we’ll continue with an adrenaline-filled activity: crossing a hanging bridge to enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Amazon from above.

Then, for even more excitement, we’ll experience a zipline adventure, gliding above the trees at an incredible height of 30 meters.

We return to the lodge for dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Optional: Night walk at no additional cost.

DAY 4: Macaw Palm Clay Lick – Jungle Walks – Piranha Fishing

We’ll rise very early today for a visit to the Palm Clay Lick, where numerous palm trees grow in swampy water. This area attracts many species of macaws and parrots that feed on the palm fruits, which are rich in sodium, calcium, potassium, and other minerals aiding digestion.

After returning to the lodge for breakfast, we’ll continue exploring the jungle’s incredible wildlife—monkeys, deer, wild boars, tapirs, and possibly spectacled bears, to name a few.

We return to the lodge for lunch, followed by another piranha fishing session in the afternoon.

After dinner, we’ll take a night walk with flashlights to observe nocturnal creatures such as tarantulas, frogs, toads, or insects on the hunt in the shadows of the night.

Dinner, shower, and rest at the lodge.

DAY 5: Return to Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast, we board a motorboat for our return trip along the Madre de Dios River to Puerto Maldonado. There, we collect our stored luggage and transfer to either the airport or bus terminal.

Amazonia Wildlife Peru – 5-Day Holiday Travel Adventure

Discover the wild heart of Peru on a 5-day Amazon holiday travel experience through the biodiverse rainforest of Tambopata. Insects, especially butterflies and moths, take center stage in this unforgettable nature journey, showcasing one of Earth’s most fascinating ecological arms races.

Insect Encounters in the Amazon Rainforest

Insects are the most diverse and abundant creatures in the Amazon rainforest. They serve as pollinators, recyclers, predators, and mimics—and play vital roles in every ecosystem. During your Amazon holiday in Peru, you’ll encounter countless insect species. Yet, scientists still know little about many of them, including how many species even exist.

Butterflies & Moths in the Amazon: A Magical Transformation

Among the most captivating rainforest insects are butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). These beautiful creatures undergo a complete metamorphosis: from caterpillar to pupa to winged adult.

But beneath their beauty lies a more complex—and even sinister—story.

Caterpillars: The Rainforest’s Eating Machines

In the early stages of life, Amazonian caterpillars are focused solely on feeding. Most specialize in eating just one or two plant species due to the toxic defenses of rainforest flora. In turn, caterpillars evolve powerful enzymes to survive, fueling a coevolutionary arms race between plant and insect.

 Mimicry & Survival Tactics

Caterpillars use two main strategies to avoid predators:

Mimicry: Some caterpillars resemble twigs, leaves, or even snake heads.

Toxins & Warning Colors: Others ingest plant toxins and advertise their danger through bright colors.

These survival tactics continue into adulthood. Butterflies and moths use eye-like wing spots, camouflage, and mimicry to confuse predators—especially birds and bats.

Night Defenses: Surviving Bat Attacks

In the Amazon, bats are major predators of night-flying moths. Toxic butterflies may click to warn predators, while some non-toxic moths drop from the sky the moment they detect bat sonar.

This ongoing battle shapes the evolution of both predator and prey—another chapter in the Amazon’s endless natural arms race.

Untapped Potential: Insect Chemistry
Amazonian insects contain powerful natural toxins, many of which are largely unexplored by modern science. Your journey through the jungle might just bring you face-to-face with undiscovered natural compounds—potential keys to future medicines.

Experience Amazon Holiday Travel in Peru

During this 5-day wildlife holiday in Peru, explore the Amazon like never before. Observe butterflies, moths, caterpillars, and countless other insects in their natural habitat. Witness firsthand the incredible adaptations that fuel the rainforest’s biodiversity.

Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, or eco-traveler, Tambopata and Amazonia Wildlife Peru offer the perfect escape into the wild wonders of the Amazon rainforest.
